no it is classed as a bank-holiday, just like all the other bank holidays if
it is your rest-day you get the day back, and it is then put on your leave sheet.

RML is not obliged to run a service on bank holidays and bank holidays are set by the government. The annual leave agreement is that you get a day back when your day off falls on official bank holidays.

Its a bank holiday given to us by the Government as opposed to a "Non service day" which is what RM have to apply for if there are unusal circumstances around other Bank Holidays - Like 2010 Christmas and New Year.

So its not a Non Servie day its an OFFICIAL Bank holiday.

And get ready for absolute hell the following day on Saturday. I remember when we got a day off for Princess Diana's funeral and the following working day was shocking.

This is a tricky situation and i haven't seen a definitive answer from either Royal Mail or the CWU.
Maybe dingo could help...

The Part-time Workers (Prevention of less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000 state that part-time workers should not be treated less favourably than full-timers in regard to their contractual terms.

I would think that a case could be made that if a part-time member works say....Thursday to Saturday, they can claim the right to paid bank holidays which fall on a Monday, if full-time members at the same workplace are given paid leave for bank holidays in addition to the statutory leave entitlements under the Working Time Regulations.

Since that is the case with Royal Mail i would imagine that you could make a case but you would need to take advice from someone with more legal experience than me.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

I've also been told by my DOM that the Royal Wedding is a 'given' holiday and thus not entitled to a day in lieu if this is your day off. Will probably affect me as i'am the office bi@tch even though iam senior to most of the floaters :Boo hoo!

Should I go chin him about the holiday???? :hmmmm
