Monday to Friday should happen.
Job losses?
We have a smallish office of 4 rotations. Going to a Monday to Friday would been obviously losing the 4 day off floaters. 2 close to retirement. 1 wanting a buy down. Fairly high turnover of staff. The 4 wouldn't be out of work long. Or reduced hours until an opening comes up.

Well just as long as it won't cause too much disruption in your office, I expect they will decide to roll it out nationally.DaveF14 wrote:Monday to Friday should happen.

After a recruitment freeze lasting since the last ice age we have just managed to fill all our vacancies.
Can RM afford or would they even want to consider VR, or are we deciding that compulsory redundancy would be acceptable for some of our colleagues?
In areas of high unemployment, some of these people wouldn't easily find another job. There would be the knock-on effect for their families and their communities.
But never mind eh? Just as long as the few that remain can work Mon-Fri.
If I was a moderator I would pull every post that advocated moving to Mon-Fri because they are f***ing stupid.

Re: 21 out of 27 in EU have a 5 day week mail operation
I wonder how many people would consider taking VR if it went to Monday to Friday. I am thinking quite a few would consider it, but I am seriously questioning why Royal Mail can't recruit students to take out duties on Saturdays. (When we were at school/college, Sunday trading wasn't the norm then - many people took a Saturday job).
I also pose the question why Royal Mail can't just deliver Special Delivery on Saturday and maybe a few parcels, on a S/A basis. That way, it will still be delivering on Saturday if the customer has paid a premium for it.
There's going to be enough job losses anyway through the revision that has been foisted upon us; why not just do away with Saturdays if that number of people are going anyway?!!
What are the government plans, anyway?
Is it FACT or just rumour that we may go to a Monday to Friday.

The revision process will more than take enough jobs out of the business for those contemplating EVR.
For those that advocate Monday to Friday only working for RM, look around your DO and count the people off 1 to 6. Every time you reach 6 you say “your job’s gone”. If that doesn’t trouble you, then I’m glad I don’t share an office with you.

Ridiculously enough we are running with one sixth of our staff absent, simply through people leaving over the past two years. We can't cover our duties as a result, so they're being lapsed/put on overtime etc.
If everyone's day off was a Saturday, given the number of staff we have - we would cover all our duties Monday to Friday!
But I know what you mean.
It's a tricky one, but there HAS to be a solution, whether that is S/A or Saturday staff.
I personally hate it because I am a part time teacher of Jewish studies as well as a postman...., and yeah, I do go to synagogue when I get a Saturday off. (That's my personal choice).
I love my job (or I used to, anyway) and hate it when managers think we are thick and brainless fodder because we CHOOSE to do this as a job. And they do, they think we are all incompetent idiots, incapable of doing anything else, and even incapable of doing our own jobs properly.

It isn't just the delivery side that would see job losses.. not much need for processing or distribution on a friday night/saturday morning if the mail isn't going anywhere until monday is there?
All those lovely new CSS machines lying idle...all that TPM money lost...all those engineers with nothing to do.
Cleaners with nothing to clean, canteen staff with nothing to....canteen.
Lots of jobs to go....

madmartin wrote:but royal mail dont want a 5 day week mail operation and the union have said they dont either, they said the members dont want it. Just shows you what the union actually knows about what its members want. They say having a 5 day operation will cause job losses but we're having job losses now and it will only get worse.
if royal mail had a chance to go monday - friday they would jump at the chance ... it would give them the opertunity to reduce staff to 1 in 6 ... plus deliverying roughly the same volume of mail over 5 days instead of 6 .... the savings would be massive ... the union are against it because it would mean they would lose 1/6th of their membership dues ... it would be akin to turkeys voting for christmas ... i would love to be off every saturday so that i could go to the football every week .... but not at the expense of the floaters

Where did the figure 16,000 job loses come from? seems alarmist to meclashcityrocker wrote:Mon - Fri will lead to about 16 000 job losses.
The loss of those subs would probably be enough to finish off the CWU as an independant trade union as well.
For all of you who think your DO would be better without a rep.....be careful what you wish for.
Personally it think monday-friday wouldnt be so bad!
Again seems alarmist, that saturday mail still has to be sorted and posted plus all the d2ds so although iam sure there would be staff reductions it wouldnt be that high!it would give them the opertunity to reduce staff to 1 in 6

Re: 21 out of 27 in EU have a 5 day week mail operation
It's not about being alarmist. Logically, working just 5 days would eradicate the need for rota men. Nobody would have a day off. Hence, 1 in 6 of the present staff - i.e. the guys who work a rota duty (and I know for a fact that this is around about 1 in 6 of the staff in our office, including drivers) - would be deemed surplus to requirements. Obviously, it cannot be generalised in such a way, and we don't know over who the guillotine would fall. But a 16.66% reduction in the work MAY logically lead to a 16.66% reduction in staff.George door to dawes wrote:Where did the figure 16,000 job loses come from? seems alarmist to meclashcityrocker wrote:Mon - Fri will lead to about 16 000 job losses.

Personally it think monday-friday wouldnt be so bad!But maybe thats because iam forced to work EVERY saturday? Job loses and redundencies are inevitable when we are privatised so why not drop a day that most people would rather not work instead of just adding delivery points and d2ds till the posties all die of exhaustion?! Complete non-deliveries on saturdays are obviously out of the question but what about a premium service? That way some satudays would be available to the OT freaks and people without anything better to do and the new owners of Royal mail can line their pockets without stealing it from us! The customers probably wouldnt even notice i still get remarks about the 2nd delivery of the day and how long ago was that scrapped?!

Or.......if you can't beat them join them
Why don't we go to a 4 day week so we can have an extra long weekend every week. Saturday Sunday and Monday. Only deliver Tues - Friday.
Let's not deliver D2D any more so the workload is manageable for those 4 days. (No more Sky mags - that's good)
Let's watch 30% of our colleagues in delivery face compulsory redundancy.
Let's close the D2D bundling centres. Let's close more MCs and RDCs.
Sack the cleaners.
Let's finish off the CWU.
Let's kill whole communities as well.
What Thatcher began, let us finish.....
