Driving allowance?

Post by somerset »

This topic might touch a few nerves  But in my DO some drivers get an extra £25 a week :Applause I am a driver and i don't receive it. I am doing the same job as them, driving the same size van but nothing extra. To me what is good for one is good for the other. Why am i missing out on £100 a month? Please no disrespect to the bikers on here, all you have to do in the morning is check you have a bike with two wheels :nana If i have a RM accident i have to declare it to my insurance company.Up goes the premium !! Also on a final note if i come in at 5 in the morning and see have puncture on van, got to replace it myself (no docket!) If you have puncture just swap for another bike? Over to you lads and lasses :cool

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

You have to drive a 400cf or above to get the £25 and you do not under any circumstances change a puncture yourself on one of them.

If you're only driving one of the small vans you may get £6 a week if you were driving at the time of the way forward agreement,if you weren't driving then you won't get it.

You DO NOT repair punctures yourself! That was stopped some years ago now. Trained personnel should be doing this. This is what is done at our office anyway and I was under the impression it was a National Agreement.

This if I remember right is correct, the other thing is unless you have had training you do not change punctures on any van, even the small ones, and never change a tyre on the `big ones`.

my feeling is that no r.m employee with exception of garage personel should change a wheel on any r.m vehicle as as far as i'm concerned yes you may well do it your own car but if you change a wheel on a van and lets just say it comes off when someone else is driving that vehicle who's responsible my guess is if they know you did it then the blame would be firmly your lap as soon as they'd written it out. and iv'e seen some that change wheels  not everyone has the knowledge to do it might sound stupid but seen it with my own two eyes

We had training from one of the royal mail mechanics `who I believe` go round the Units` giving the correct advice. (check with your h&safety rep) His instruction was only after the `training do you change punctures`. there are about 6/8 people in our unit with this training and they should be the only people to change tyres. But of course the Screws will try it on or people may even be willing to do it! but without the training DO NOT. EVEN WITH THE SMALL VANS THE INSTRUCTION WAS THAT IF THE WHEEL NUTS CAN NOT BE LOOSENED BY HAND (not having to apply pressure with your foot on the wheel brace) YOU CALL THE `GARAGE OUT!

No, you can go on a 2 hours course ( unbelieveably!) to learn how to change a tyre on a RM vehicle

Training is given to a couple of people to change tyres, which is agreed - BUT - within that agreement is the proviso that the vehicle must be taken to the workshop at the earliest opportunity. There is also a log to be completed whenever this occurs because if the wheel falls off then someone is responsible.

Now for cycles. It is the duty of each cyclist to check the cycle daily and report any defects - not fix them! That work is carried out by a cycle mechanic who is a highly trained individual capable of multi tasking. Whenever a cycle is worked on there is a cycle history log which details what work has been carried out and by whom. Our unit has 4 cycle mechanics capable of safely repairing the machine.

I'm a rural driver and i change wheels!! I'm not waiting for the RAC to come out! The last last time i broke down it took them two and a half hours to come and get me! Try telling a call center in birmingham where you are if you're not on a A or B road.. Most of my roads are dirt tracks and unclassified roads! Plus my scottish accent doesn't help
