That can't be right surely !!!!dayjur wrote:We got told today that 8 census letters weighs 1kg,thats approx 80kg on my walk (630 drops).
Also got told that allegedly 40% of offfice D2Ds for 7th march will now be moved to 13th.
isn't the weight limit on bags (2nd onwards) - 11kg ?
so that would mean 88 census letters per bag not including normal mail and packets ?
call me psychic, but i can predict sudden bouts of sickness nationwide on or about the 7th march

Re: Census dates
The point was/is...when you have an exceptional circumstance like the census an ad-hoc payment would have gone a long way towards engaging the staff and easing the pain.Big Daz wrote:Not different, but polling cards are Election material and CWU/RML policy since Ive been with RML (1991) is for delivery OPG's to recive extra payment for election material.fishtank wrote:Unlike...say...polling cards which are different because.....?Big Daz wrote: Normal mail, so no extra payment.
It would probably have at least partially paid for itself in lower pressure overtime payments.
As usual in these circumstances the dinosaur management running this company into the ground cannot see further than the end of the balance sheet but would quite happily waste money on vans that are too small and PDA's that are too large.

Well, it's actually around 7.7 census letters that will weigh 1kg.BettySwollocks wrote:That can't be right surely !!!!dayjur wrote:We got told today that 8 census letters weighs 1kg,thats approx 80kg on my walk (630 drops).

In terms of the individual who claims their office will be doing 50/50 on Monday and Tuesday, that would, on an average round in our office, equate to a further 32kg per day, and probably an extra three pouches. On my round it would be another 38kg per day.

So what's going to happen if some bright spark cottons on to the fact it would be cheaper to send election material out as a D2D?Big Daz wrote:

Would there be a payment? Would there still be an opt out clause?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: Census dates
I think we need a new election agreement anyway taking into account the new delivery methods.
How can you opt out if your partner doesn't?
You don't prep their delivery but you deliver half of it.

Re: Census dates
Sorry but I have to disagree with you there.... MY understanding is.... the Census contract was 'won' in a competitive tender against other companies who also wanted this work. RM LOST the Scottish part of this contract. As such cost wise RM had to make a bid that covered the fact that the other companies weren't/wouldn't pay any sort of extra payment to the delivery people above their normal wage.fishtank wrote:The point was/is...when you have an exceptional circumstance like the census an ad-hoc payment would have gone a long way towards engaging the staff and easing the pain.Big Daz wrote:Not different, but polling cards are Election material and CWU/RML policy since Ive been with RML (1991) is for delivery OPG's to recive extra payment for election material.fishtank wrote:Unlike...say...polling cards which are different because.....?Big Daz wrote: Normal mail, so no extra payment.

It'll be interesting to see what happens at the next election with regards the extra payments we get for delivering Candidate Election material. I'm sure that they'll be other companies that would offer to do this for far less than what RM will charge. I reguarly see d2d delivery people around my walk delivering for a pittance. The what? 6p an item over and above a delivery cost is going to be a huge incentive for them to go after the contract.... they may even probably offer to undercut RM. The only bonus RM has in its favor is that it IS RM a trusted British Institution. Other than that
Welcome to competition... welcome to the FUTURE!

Re: Census dates
RM didn't LOSE the Scottish part of the contract...the Scottish Government decided to go in a completely different direction with the delivery of the census using interviewers who will actually knock on peoples door, gather data and advise people on how to fill in the form.Indy wrote: Sorry but I have to disagree with you there.... RM obviously cannot offer that service at any cost.
Who else bid for the census Indy?
