Court hearing after dog attacked Chorley postwoman

A dog which attacked a postwoman whiles she was delivering mail at a Chorley house has been ordered to be kept on a lead at all times when it is outside its home.

The dog’s owner Peter Bennetton, 55, of Wright Street, Chorley, has also been ordered to keep a postbox which he put up outside his property in place.

Mr Bennetton appeared before magistrates in a civil action brought Chorley Council after the postwoman made a complaint after she was attacked by his Patterdale Terrier dog.

The court she went to deliver mail to Mr Bennetton’s home last August.

She had delivered there before and was aware of a dog on the premises which often jumped up at the front door to grab the letters as she posted them through the letterbox.

The front door was open so she put the letters on the doorstep. The dog ran and leaped at her face, biting her hand which she’d put up to protect herself.

She claimed elastic bands, used to bundle the mail, that she’d put round her wrist, stopped the dog from puncturing her skin.

She managed to push the dog away but it scratched her chest drawing blood and then grabbed the hem of her pants.

Mr Bennetton was interviewed and said he had been doing some DIY at home which was why the front door was open.

He said the dog probably ‘nipped’ the postwoman because it goes mad when letters come through the door, but that it was not a vicious attack.

He added the dog had never bitten anyone in the 10 months he’d owned it.

Mr Bennetton was also ordered to pay £300 in costs.

As this was a civil case, Mr Bennetton was not accused or convicted of any criminal offence.
