RM is NOT in my opinion a public service dominated business anymore. It IS a commercially driven communication medium led by banks. 1 of those banks account with RM is the equivalent budget for the largest area in the country. Hope that gives some kind of proportion to the issue.
I think there is a public service within RM, but again it will have to come at a price as the revenue bucket has got smaller, and there are now more players in the field. The maths currently do not stack up to keep everyone in jobs who currently has one. If you have alternative stats to argue this, or can see a political/economic solution then please shout now

A clearer case of cognitive dissonance i have never seen.Your whole arguement is based on the complete acceptance of leightons ideas and vision of the future.I dont think im alone in rejecting this. There is no ''competitor" delivering the mail to all uk households and there never will be the "maths do not stack up". Consider the costs of establishing a rival delivery network:real estate;plant;transport;recruitment and labour;advertising etc, all to duplicate an existing established network . Even with a wildly ambitous target of capturing 50% of the market immediately thats half a ''revenue bucket" theres no chance of covering start up and operating costs.
Dispute this if you want but the fact is the "competition" have had years to plan for this and not one has done it. Big buisness isnt usually slow to exploit a profit making opportunity. Sorry Adam

I too don't believe that there is ever going to be a delivery network to rival ours because the start up costs would be astronomical - BUT - lets be the devils advocate for a moment - something you will be familiar with. If someone like TNT could persuade Postcomm that it would be in the interests of competition that they be allowed to "Rent" part of our delivery offices, our frames and other equipment perhaps Yorks, parking space for vehicles etc. then their start up costs would be minimal wouldn't they?
Of course that is a hypothetical scenario but not too dissimilar to BT whose exchanges are open to all and sundry and who are under obligation to keep updating for the benefit of others.
Because RM will be making revenue on the one hand and losing it on the other it would probably be of interest to our two Ronnies.
There are a lot of people working from home nowadays also farms that could not make a living have opened up little industrial areas and these are normally on rural deliveries at the tail ends of rounds, these people need there mail early to get on with their days work..........Royal mails answer is let them work a day behind! They don't give a toss! Keep showing us Runcorn Office and how wonderful the workforce find it now..........have they had their wages cut yet?? They said there had been loads of complaints but stopped now, what is the point in them complaining to a brick wall you will give up in the end doesn't mean that you like it!!! :lfo :cfo

BUT you wouldn't have an independent end to end system would you - and probably still wouldn't - BUT - you could tell your customers you did because like a curates egg it would be good in parts. Think also of the recent industrial action - here is an independent workforce going in to your place of work, using your equipment and delivering your mail - quite difficult to combat that really.
