What you mean just to get there. :hmmmm
Actually, it was 7. What I meant to say was travel and deliver, sorry, didn't make sense really did it? lol. And that was repeated on Thursday. Ridiculous really but I'm showing good will .... for now. HCTs are a different ball game and they take some getting used to. It hasn't helped that the planner has not consulted with the staff and he isn't even from our area. As we have only introduced a part revision for now, we are not getting the whole picture of how things will look. There are mixed results at the moment.
Anyway, it was my day off today so I've had a rest and a little time to think more about tackling the walk and making it a bit less hassle and hopefully a bit quicker.

Hellish. Absolutely hellish.

Entered the office at my starting time of half 8 and there's nobody there but me, the managers and one other part-timer. This is happening on a constant basis, the majority of our office is part time and starts at the same time as me - where the hell are they? Oh, that's right. They all started early! One even started at 5am (3-AND-A-HALF HOURS BEFORE HIS START TIME!) the same as he always does and it still bothers me as much as it did on day one.

So, i get my packet bag (which is overflowing) , greet the other part-timer who works at the frame across from me and survey my frame - rammed with f***ing Sky Mags. Seriously, why the hell does a service that provides Television with a built-in and constantly updating electronic TV guide feel the need to dispatch these back-breaking, soul-crushing, sellophane-wrapped SHITBRICKS!It just doesn't make sense to me.

But it gets better, my mate across from me then informs me that we cannot refuse Starbursting today (Lapsing, Collapsing, whatever) because, 'lo and behold, everyone else came in early and took theres out without a problem and there's no-one to cover ours. Effectively penalising us for starting at our times. Same old story.

So i head to the front office to find THREE MANAGERS lounging around drinking coffee. Totally pissed off and it's only 8:50am. I've been in 20 mins. I fill in my docket on the sheet only to get "Eeeerrrrrrrr, you can't be putting more OT in surely" and other such witticisms from the budding Bill Hickses within. Why don't they just kill themselves? They're of no benefit to mankind and all they do is bully, harass and crawl to get what they want. What a fulfilling existence. But of course, they've got their high-paying jobs with added bonuses and their flash cars and all the other things that come from being in a managerial position, why should they care that they're making peoples lives hell? Why should they care that they may be sending people home at the end of the working day to have nervous breakdowns?

I did get out the place eventually. Out to my walk where i can forget the c***s for a while and just get on with my work and as back-breaking and hard-going as it can be, it is sort of cathartic in its own way. Also bagged an hour to put down tommorow, they can choke on it.

God, i could've went on forever there but there's just too much. I hate them all. Why do people think they have the right to bitch and whine against being given extra work when they come in upto three-and-a-half hours early to accomodate it? And why are people like me penalised for doing the job properly and wishing to be paid for the work we were forced into doing by the stupidity and selfishness of others?

My day off too and also monday. I was asked if I would like to do my own duty on both days but declined. Once upon a time I would have been delighted at the opportunity but now that I have embraced the new systems of working I need a rest period more than I need the overtime payments and don't see myself doing any more days off.

Ditto. 5 boxes of walk sequence. United Utilities providing the bulk of the DSA. Docket to be claimed, but then they cannot really argue with that, as we are working longer Saturdays and dealing with the DSA as requested. I'm not entirely happy at working longer/later at the weekend but am now resigned to the fact that the union have not come up with any alternative to counter this.

About average, mailwise. Using an HCT just takes a lot longer. About 5hrs and 15mins today, plus the inevitable journey to and from the walk. :cry

You know, you should have gone home at the point that the following happened:
put on new walk!!!!!! :arrrghhh
I would have done. You had a gentleman's agreement with a manager to work your day off provided certain conditions were met. Once he broke that gentleman's agreement, you should have gone home. Who could have argued with you? You didn't have to stay and you weren't contractually obliged to. (Although I no longer work my day off, ever.)

For goodness sake, show some backbone next time.

Now, my day was pretty mediocre to say the least. I got in, grabbed the 'missorts'. Had a number of DSA mail-shots, one of which concerned the digital switchover. I was astonished to discover I had nigh on 100 of these, mostly for houses that are also receiving Sky magazines and have the newer, digital satellite dishes. I guess sense isn't something everybody possesses in abundance. Then I had the usual crap in amongst that. My walk took me three hours and thirty minutes, which wasn't too bad all things considered. Packets were bad, but outside of the DSA affected (infected) areas, mail wasn't that bad.

I didn't want to start a new topic so I'm hoping this is the right thread. Forgive the wall of text! ;)

Had my induction Monday. It was pretty boring, all common sense but hey, I'm getting paid for it! Tuesday was my first day, started at 8:45, finished around 11:30am. I'm told that was a very light day though. When I arrived at the DO no one even knew who I was. For a company that employs over 160,000 you'd think they might be more organised (I have a feeling I need to get used to this sort of thing...). Didn't even know what my hours are. I told them the vacancy said between 9am-2pm, 22.5hrs a week. If I actually work 9am-2pm that works out about 25hrs a week. Not that it matters because they want me to be coming in at 08:30 anyway so I have to book overtime every day. I've not ordered uniform, been told you don't normally get it until you've been there 6 weeks. Never mind basic then? Lol. I did get given a fleece and high vis though so it's not all bad. I really need shoes though. I've already got two huge blisters after 2 days. :/

It was only my second day today but I just feel like I'm really struggling. After Tuesday my legs and feet really ache. I just keep telling myself when we're out that there's not much more to go and it WILL get better in time but I had my trainer and the other new guy ask me what I think of the job. He did manual labour before so he's used to it. To me it seems like they're both expecting me to quit. I've been looking for a job since I left school (July 2010), I've had three interviews and now I finally have a job. I'm not going to quit after 2 days. During the time I left school and now I've literally done no exercise. Of course I'm going to be in pain for a while. That isn't a good enough reason to quit!

Some of the addresses are weird like a property will have two different names (house name, not the occupier)/numbers which leads to me getting confused. I did a different walk to the one I did on Tuesday and tomorrow I'll be doing ANOTHER different walk. We've been using those trolley things (big red ones) and I pretty much hate them. I'd rather be carrying the mail in a bag. Tomorrow I'll be on a bike duty though. I had a go on one of the bikes today and I couldn't turn properly, haha. I'm worried I'll be slowing down my trainer and the other guy I'm with though (she's training us both at once). Friday I'll be following the guy whose walk I'll be doing for two weeks (on my own on Monday), then I'll be on a different one again...

Forgive my lack of knowledge on terms: Sorting out the mail into the frames(?) is quite difficult. Not in the sense that it's actually a difficult task to complete just that it's hard to find where which road is when I've never looked at it before. Bundling(?) the mail is... OK, I guess. I keep making them too big because I want less of them (That logic doesn't even work, I don't know what I'm thinking, lol). I'm left handed and apparently that makes it more difficult. I don't see why it would but OK then! I already have a strong hatred for elastic bands. One snapped right on the tip of my finger today, in the freezing cold. I loved that...

I also have a hatred for letter boxes at the very bottom of the door, draft excluders and flats. Oh how I hate flats. On the plus side It's been sunny.

I'm told the woman who normally trains people is back on Monday and she's really nice. She'll make sure new starters get easy walks and actually stay on them for a while. They also have to do some "risk assessment" thing with me tomorrow because I'm under 18 they have to change things or something, like I'm not allowed to carry a max of 16kg, that has to be lowered. I don't even know, haha.
