RESIDENTS may be fed up with the Royal Mail's service but only 45 attended a protest meeting.

Organiser David Shepherd, who will be standing as a Liberal Democrat in the May city council elections, said: "I delivered 9,000 leaflets but just 45 people turned up."

The disappointing turn-out happened at the May Lodge in Central Parade, Herne Bay, on Wednesday night.

Bay protesters have joined forces with Whitstable to campaign to keep the sorting offices in both towns.

Royal Mail wants to close them and move staff to Canterbury. It says it is a business decision and not subject to public consultation.

Campaigners had been hoping a member of Royal Mail management would be at the meeting but he, too, failed to show.

A second meeting is planned for Wednesday, March 2, at the May Lodge at 6pm.

Mr Shepherd said: "I hope it will be better attended. We are hoping to build alliances with pensioners. They are going to be the worst affected by the closures."
