I was failed by the Royal Mail

THE Royal Mail has failed to deliver on a promise, according to an angry Herne Bay resident.

Brian MacDowall, of Greenhill Gardens, was forced to hunt the streets for his postman when a parcel failed to arrive, after he had paid extra to guarantee its delivery.

The 60-year-old said: "I paid to have an item sent special delivery to arrive before 1pm on Tuesday, February 15. But it only arrived by Thursday.

"I ordered a computer part and the delivery cost me £5.95 extra because I needed it quickly."

When the package failed to arrive, Mr MacDowall went to the sorting office in Eddington Lane. He said: "I was told it was out with the postman on the round. I tried to find him but the rounds are so big now I couldn't track him down."

Mr MacDowall, who recently retired from pharmaceutical giant Glaxo, said: "There is a new system which has been put in place in Herne Bay but it clearly isn't working. Now I will have to claim to get my money back."

He said: "Getting items to customers shouldn't be that difficult. It used to happen years ago without any problems. Now special delivery items seem to be treated as ordinary items, even though they cost a premium price."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We apologises to Mr MacDowall that he did not receive the service he paid for.

"Our customer service team is looking into the incident and will contact Mr MacDowall direct to resolve the issue."

Welcome to the new world of RM where managers do whatever they can to cut costs and don;t inform their managers for fear of being removed, I know I've no time alloted in my delivery to go off route and deliver SDs before 1pm.

I take it you are handing these items back to the cage for your allocated driver to do then, or getting the likely late delivery authorised by your lino?
