A real-life 'Postman Pat' is set to retire on Friday after more than 40 years of delivering post in Bourne End.

Patrick 'Pat' Cordingley, 60, will hang up his red bag after nearly 42 years spent making sure the villagers receive their mail on time.

Pat said: "I always fancied being a postman, especially at Christmas time."

After working as a local baker's assistant when he finished school, Pat befriended Bourne End's then postman who lived above the bakery.

He took a job as a postman in Cookham, but when his friend emigrated to America a month later Pat took on the Bourne End round and has remained there ever since.

He added: "I enjoy being out and about, seeing people and having a chat, that's what I'll miss the most. I'll be sad to leave the job but I can't do it forever."
