POSTWOMAN who stole hundreds of parcels containing cash, vouchers, gifts and appointment cards has been spared jail.

Investigators from the Royal Mail found the stash of stolen parcels containing gifts and more than £2,000 in cash and vouchers at the home of Dawn Guy after setting a trap for the 27-year-old.

Her bosses planted two envelopes, one containing euro notes and the other a £20 note – which Guy took. But after hearing of Guy's previous good character and lengthy history of serious depression, Recorder Michael Fitton QC spared her prison so she could get psychological help.

The former straight-A GCSE student pleaded guilty at magistrates court earlier this month to two counts of theft, one for stealing an unknown quantity of mail between July 1 and October 13 last year, the other for stealing 92 packets while under supervision between October, 12-22, 2010, and a third charge of delaying postal services for 203 items.


She was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court yesterday to six months in prison suspended for 12 months, made the subject of a 12-month supervision order and ordered to pay £600 compensation and a £1,400 contribution towards the £5,000 costs of her prosecution.

Staff at Royal Mail became suspicious in October last year after numerous reports of undelivered mail which should have gone through the Nailsea sorting office, the court heard.

Analysts identified two members of staff whose integrity was questioned before a second computer test revealed Guy as a suspect.

Prosecuting, Richard Cole told the court they planted two cards in Guy's pigeon hole with addresses for outside her delivery area and waited outside her then home in Birdcombe Close.

She took them and was then spotted going home two hours before her shift was finished, carrying a delivery bag.

Investigators found just over £2,000 in cash and a Royal Mail delivery bag at her house with 92 opened items of mail from a total of 203 undelivered items.

Guy, who now lives with her parents in Cherry Road after splitting from her partner, later admitted £600 of the cash was stolen and confessed to offences dating back to July. She told police it was not for financial gain and she was not thinking straight, said Mr Cole.

Defending, Sam Jones detailed Guy's history of depression from the age of 12 and alluded to a number of serious incidents.

The judge also saw a letter from Guy's GP, saying her mental health was severely affecting her judgment and behaviour.

In this case, it was because of her Psycological problems. The same defence is used in many types of case.

Indeed as was the case when a girl in our office was caught stockpiling mail in her garage, 100 hours community service because she was stressed and unable to cope! Just seen her starting work in a local retailers on the tills, lets hope she doesn't find that too stressful too eh!
