strike breakers legacy; when i first started at royal mail a number of people pointed out a scab, he had crossed a picket line once, apologised publicly the next day and never crossed the line again. This occured 7 YEARS before.

People never forget. The strike breakers should realise this. They will get their payback
(and I don't mean the 30 pieces of silver from RM) sooner or later.

NOT IN MY OFFICE THEY DONT......one scab bastard who not only scabbed but came in on his "DAY OFF" on overtime,. got caught by the lads tearing address labels off packets and then signing them off as unaddressed. the address labels and witnesses were offered to our "dumb", the addresses were checked to see if the people actually live there, and they did. now the "dumb" is saying that there is no evidence that this scab has been signing peoples mail off, and without saying it he has called the lad who caught him a liar and set the scab up. the scab is back at work.

Dave, you have a year to disassosciate the CWU with the pathetic Labour party, or my subs go elsewhere.
They are no longer our friends, and they are the ones who have caused all this. Wake up and listen to us!

I take it you are aware of CWU policy to have a vote of all political levy paying members on dissafillating from the labour party if the regulator is not removed or substanially reformed by may/june next year?

If you cant wait untill then pull out the political levy and save yourself the massive sum of £5.20p a year of which only a small fraction goes to the labour party.

The answer is to do what UNISON have done and split the levy so those members who wish to contribute to the political activties of the CWU can do so without any of their money going to Labour and those who are happy with a bit of their money going to labour party and understand that there is a diffrence between party and goverment can do so.

DEMOCRACY is needed in the political levy, we can not feed the levy to the wolves simply because of a small fraction of weekly subs go to the labour party!

i think that Dave, Billy and the other negotiators will do the job for us they haven't lied to us once yet during the campaign and kept the impact on us to a minimum while the business experienced a level of disruption never seen before.

my point of writing is that if the deal was not acceptable and we were over the 28 day period this union would not have to reballot as some people suggest. The law is that while negotiations continue if strike action is taken after a 28 day break and it is in within a reasonable amount of time our union would not have to ballot again. This is correct as i have experienced IA before were this has happened.

I think we should be asking our PEC to eject those members that worked throughout this action and only use the union as some sort of insurance policy. These strike breakers are of no benefit to our type of organisation and undermine the solidarity that we have built up over the years. strike breakers have no morales and cannot even justify themselves when asked why get rid of them now and lets support those who support us.

You don't have to leave the union. You can always get an opt-out form from your branch and cease paying into the political fund. I did that nine years ago when I decided I didn't want a single penny of mine to be handed over to fund the deposits of Labour Party candidates in local elections or the anti-working class policies of their parliamentary fellow members. Looking back over the last nine years, I'm glad I did it. You only have to look at what the Labour Party have done to this job to see why. They've appointed Leighton and Crozier, which is bad enough. I could add all their foreign policy, their school and hospital closures, their lack of a housing policy and much more, but we all know about those. All I need now is an opt-out form so as when I shop in Tesco etc. none of the money I spend will be donated to the Tory Party. It's not a question of the amount involved, it's the whole idea that I'm helping fund a bunch of self-interested swine who somehow think the Labour Party is remotely socialist.

Well said IWW Worker the more posties that Opt out of paying the political levy to the Labour Party( Ask your branch secretary for a form) the better.

The Labour party now rely on big business donations anyway.

Its suicidal to carry on paying a levy to the New Labour Party.(Old Tory)who appointed the hatchet men Crozier & Leighton (Burke& Hare) in the first place.

Another way is to put a motion to the CWU Annual Conference calling for and end to paying a political levy to a party that is destroying our industry.

Watch out for your Local CWU Branch calling for motions to Annual conference (usually in May)this is your chance to hit back at the Labour Party and Crozier & Leighton
(Burke & Hare)

PS The working class and the employing class do have something in common"Money"

I found this in an old copy of 'Bread and Roses' the IWW magazine from 2000. It's part of a much longer article and one I think which might be relevent if the proposed vote goes ahead in the 2008 conference.

The C.W.U conference recently voted out a proposal to raise the levy because they thought Labour had not proved itself worthy of support. This followed hard on the heels of a speech by Stephen Byers extolling the virtues of 'partnership'. Of course Derek Hodgson, the present General Secretary was not too pleased with this. "You've stabbed him in the back" he reportedly told delegates referring to Byers. Someone should have told Derek that that's probably the only way you can stab someone who is running away.

Perhaps Hodgson could see a safe Labour seat disappearing over the horizon and that's why he threw his dummy out of the pram. Various other speakers suggested the political fund be withheld altogether if any further privatisation took place within the Post Office. Well, it's only taken the privatisation of the engineering department and the catering department to bring this sort of talk about. Quick work comrades! But if you believe dear old Derek, Blair kept him informed of these events anyway. Once again the rank and file take the lead while the leaders keep their heads firmly in the sand.

But whatever union you belong to, can you seriously justify giving money to Blair? Well yes you can actually, especially if you have your sights set on becoming a Labour councillor or perhaps an MP or even a union bureaucrat polishing a chair with his arse while the members slave away on a fraction of your salary. Show your loyalty to your class and give Blair the elbow.

Thanks for letting me know that, I'll ask my rep tomorrow. But still, the CWU is associating itself with Nu Labour which is something I do not want or like. To say what other choice we have is short-sighted. We could even go it alone, standing CWU men against them at the anticipated election!!! We'd have no chance, but we might take some votes off them!

I'm not happy about the link with Labour either for very many reasons which is why I am a member of the IWW (which has no links with any political party at all) as well as the CWU. Many people have faith in the parliamentary system, personally, I don't, but there are several left parties which stand candidates in elections. It might be worth having a look around to see if there is one in your area. There is one called Independent Working Class Action which have taken some council seats from Labour and I would think that would be a better bet than standing a CWU candidate. One thing we agree on is the absolute crapness of Labour who are so bankrupt they have to rely on the spectre of the crappy Tory Party to frighten people into voting for them.
