A SUSPECTED fraudster conned a post office cashier into handing over an extra £530, police have revealed.
Officers are looking for a man they believe tricked a clerk at Skerne Park post office, in Darlington, into parting with the money after asking the assistant to change £900 in £20 notes into £10 notes.
When the cashier did as he requested, he claimed to change his mind. During this confusion, the suspect is thought to have concealed £530 of £10 notes on his person and handed the cashier back just £370.
The cashier was unaware of what the man had done until after he left with his original £900, plus the additional £530.
The incident happened on October 15 at 12.10pm, but details have just been released to the media.
The police would like to speak to a man described of possible Iranian origin, aged between 35 and 40, of medium build and about 5ft 10in, with short black curly hair and goatee beard. He was wearing a dark coat or jacket.
Anyone with information is asked to call PC Cottrell at Darlington police station on 0345-60-60-365 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.
