Talks are continuing to find a new home for Aylsham Post Office - amid concerns in the town about preserving the service, and a local parcel office.
..
The current sub-postmaster is due to step down in mid March, sparking worries about the future of services in the building on Hungate Street which also houses a local Royal Mail office.

Post Office officials have confirmed they are looking at a possible relocation, and locals are pressing for reassurances the services will not be lost to the town.

The Post Office has told concerned local MP Keith Simpson it has secured a short-term lease on the building and is seeking a temporary sub-postmaster to operate the branch until a permanent solution could be found.

It was “in discussions with a prospective applicant” over future services and “if successful will be carrying out a full consultation on the relocation of the branch.”

The Post Office assured Mr Simpson, in a e-mail shown to town councillors, it was doing “everything we can to avoid a temporary closure at this branch.”

Town councillors are writing to the Post Office seeking an update and reassurances about the retention of services.

Liz Jones told fellow councillors said there were also concerns about losing the Royal Mail office, because it could entail trips to North Walsham if people had to collect a missed parcel delivery.

There's still dozens of SPDOs like Aylsham's in the Norwich Postcode Area, but Norfolk always does give the impression that time has stood still there.

The Post Office will be moving into Budgens in June, and it's 99.9% certain that us lot in the Sorting Office will be transferring to North Walsham (8.8 miles away.) Why they can't move us into a unit on the expanding Industrial Estate in Aylsham is anyones guess. There's a crazy situation where some of the rural deliveries at Sheringham would actually be better off if they were based in our office (Erpingham and Calthorpe for example) so they could move them to our office (there'll be a load of space out the front when the Post Office has moved) and keep the building on with a Supervisor/PHG running the callers office and doing a small delivery.

Obviously this is too simple, and they'll have us in the cycle shed at North Walsham!
