A district judge has criticised the Royal Mail for employing a postal worker with a long criminal record for dishonesty.
Judge Graham Wilkinson was shocked to hear that 44-year-old Zydrunas Ksonas was employed as a sorting officer by Royal Mail when he appeared at the city’s magistrates court on two charges of theft.
The native Lithuanian had a history of 26 convictions for dishonesty against him since arriving in the UK in 2004, the court heard yesterday.
Mr Wilkinson said: “A person as dishonest as Mr Ksonas should not be working with Royal Mail when there is an ongoing problem of things going missing from the mail.”
When told via an interpreter that Ksonas was employed through an agency, he said that it was the Royal Mail’s responsibility to ensure agencies carried out staff checks.
Ksonas, of Leicester Street, Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton, was jailed for eight weeks after admitting two counts of thefts.
Roger Bleazard, prosecuting, said Ksonas was arrested on Wednesday when he was caught stealing a bottle of non-alcoholic mulled wine wine from Marks & Spencer’s in Dudley Street.
He was also sentenced for the theft of a case of Stella lager, worth £11, from Asda in Whitmore Reans on November 9.
Royal Mail spokesman Richard Hall said today that an inquiry into the matter had been launched.

Well, it's just not good enough. If RM's elbow doesn't know what it's RM's arse has been -- and is doing, then going up the same sh*t creek without another paddle is like saying (to all concerned) that it's none of anyone's business who Royal Mail employ, or how Royal Mail employ them.
Having said that, RM appears to be disintegrating -- fast, so is it any wonder that we sometimes get to work with complete t*ss*rs like this. I mean, if RM are not in the know about what goes on around them (internally), then what hope have they in knowing anything of the real world outside. It wouldn't surprise me if they had their own 'in-house' vetting processes, which are as flawed a process as those belonging to other areas of the group.

We posties do things differently, but we still get shot at!

Surely we should have some sort of law in place where we can deport criminals like this? I know he is from the EU but 26 convictions seems like a good reason to send the guy back to Lithuania?!

If someone hasn't already become a Britich Citizen, then I agree with you. But has he become a British Citizen, or has he kept his original Nationality?

Deportation After a Criminal Conviction
If a foreign national is convicted of a criminal offence which results in a prison sentence they are liable to be deported when they are released for prison. In some cases the sentencing judge will recommend that the individual be deported at the same time as he sentences them to prison.
The more serious the offence, the more likely a judge is to recommend that the foreign national be deported. Whether or not a judge has recommended deportation, when a foreign national is approaching the end of their sentence the Prison Service should notify the immigration authorities of his impending release. This should be done sufficiently far in advance so that preparations for deportation can be commenced in good time.
In cases where no recommendation for deportation was made by the sentencing judge a foreign national should be considered for deportation if he received a prison sentence of longer than one year, or two years in the case of a European citizen. In deciding whether a foreign national should be deported after he has served his sentence the immigration authorities will take into account the offender’s age, his links to the UK and the seriousness of his offence.
