Reinstated after being sacked for not wearing a cycle helmet

‘Vindicated’ Southport postman wins his job back after being sacked for not wearing a cycle helmet

A POSTMAN sacked for not wearing his cycle helmet was awarded an out-of-court settlement for unfair dismissal.

Dad-of-two David Smith was sacked by Royal Mail in May 2009 after 17 years delivering mail across Southport.

After a lengthy appeal he is now to be reinstated after post bosses settled the case ahead of a tribunal due to begin on Monday.

Colleagues of Mr Smith – who was forced to get another job after his dismissal – spoke of their delight at hearing of the settlement.

One postman, who asked not to be named, said: “There was a buzz around the place when people heard that Dave was coming back.

“He will have been paid back pay for the duration of his suspension and a lump sum in compensation.

“It’s been a long time and the stress on his family has been incredible. He’s finally got justice because it was absolutely ridiculous he was sacked. Royal Mail’s attitude to its workers in the past few years has been nothing short of terrible so it’s fantastic to get one over on them.”

Royal Mail was labelled “draconian” after a number of Southport staff were dismissed for not following guidelines.

Peter Baker, 44, dismissed despite a quarter century service for leaving his van unlocked as he delivered mail to a farmhouse on a single-lane track.
How did they know?? They must've followed him up the lane, i'm glad i don't work there cause by the sounds of it i'd have been sacked a long time ago.

Any thoughts on why RM would back down so close to the unfair-dismissal hearing..........................

It must be group wide this skewed version of promotion on incompetence. There is a theory where everyone is promoted continually until they reach a position at which they become incompetent, RM reverse this and appear to promote people based on how incompetent they already are.
