TWINS from Buntingford were left without their birthday cards after Royal Mail changed its special delivery collection policy, forcing anyone who misses the postman to drive to Ware.

Sam and Oliver Croucher, of Monks Walk, were looking forward to receiving cards from their grandmother to mark their 9th birthday, but were disappointed to find the post had ended up in Ware.

Mum Naomi said: "My sons celebrated their birthdays on Tuesday and it’s a pity they couldn’t receive their birthday cards until the day after.

"I am absolutely shocked that they made me drive all the way to Ware, which is odd because we have our own Post Office here in Buntingford itself.

"It’s not only an inconvenience, but expensive as it will also cost me a few pounds to drive to Ware and back."

Previously, special delivery items were kept at Basra’s Supermarket in Baldock Road if businesses and residents in Buntingford were unavailable to sign for their items.

Now anyone who misses a special deliver will now have to drive 20 minutes or hop on a bus for 40 minutes each way to get to Ware delivery office in Marsh Lane.

Mayor Surjit Singh Basra has been the postmaster to Buntingford for the past 20 years and runs the local Post Office counter at his supermarket.

He said: "The decision to change the way things work is awful, and the worst thing is they didn’t even give us any notice.

"My clients rely on me to provide them with a service and Royal Mail is now forcing them to drive down to Ware to collect a parcel or even an envelope.

"Customers are complaining to me about this, and there's nothing I can do."

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: "Royal Mail have been made aware of the situation and is investigating the matter."

Had they continued the quote it would have read "... but we're going to do f all about it."

but if it's special delivery you should know it's coming and be in.
