Strange then that our wages have increased so disproportionately to the cost of living we are finding it increasingly more difficult to manage financially.

:Applause Spot on!

As has already been mentioned we no longer get paid for many things. D2Ds, sky mags, early morning suppliments, overtime rates have been slashed on walks from 9hrs per walk to 6hrs, etc

The real difference in wages is probably closer to £50 and allowing for inflation thats a pay cut isnt it? :hmmmm :d'oh!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Isn't a better basic wage better than a higher docket rate?
I agree that various allowances (how we managed to get some of them in the 1st place is beyond me) have gone but the basic has gone up considerably.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Yes and No. Yes the basic wage is better for someone thats on a full time contract, but not someone thats on a lower contract. Hence the reason why part time staff do most of the overtime, while the full timers are not bothered as they can live with the basic pay thats given to them.

Part time staff that do overtime all the time should get some sort of allowance as they are the ones that are worse off, when it comes to holidays, and sick pay.

As has the cost of living.
Example:
1.5% pay rise in april
1% NI increase in april

0.5% pay inrease in real terms

VAT increase 2.5% further impacts this pay rise

This thread is just union spin.

This thread is just union spin.
Some members asked for figures and they have been posted, the discussion is varied in what various posters think.

Thanks Dingo for providing the figures. Can you please advise whether the rate shown at the start is just the basic salary, or does it include all the other extras that were available/a part of the contract, at the time, in order to make a fairer assessment of the differences in pay, as you, I and everyone else know that there is no way that Royal Mail has increased general pay by the amounts you have shown.

Postman, although basic pay is important, as this is what you get when you are sick or on holiday, surely what is most important ,is what money is being taken home, in other words the bottom line. A company does not survive on gross profit, it is the nett profit which it has to reinvest or pay the shareholders, and similarly it is the nett wages that we have to meet our bills. If our nett wages had increased at the same rate as the basic pay has, then I dont think we would have anything to shout about in terms of remuneration, but I think the real statistics will show otherwise. What we need to know is in real terms what have the CWU done in the past 12 years to increase bottom line earnings.

You probably know the answer to your first question lincox as for the second I would suggest that the earning capacity was greater before. This latest deal has pinned pay rises over a three year period when prices are rising at an incredible rate and it will take until 2012 to more or less reach pre 2010 take home pay. From memory I can only recall 1 big pay rise in 20 years.

i agree great strides were made over the last decade on basic pay, its just a shame that we fooked that all up with a stinker of a deal which with inflation touching 5% means we are in reality taking a 3.5% pay cut

 Many of us always worked all paid hours-- in a round a bout way! Some of you believe the management spin about us all finishing hours early every day! In the early days, although finishing early some days, we finished later on others and very rarely claimed O/T for this. that is when there was trust between Managers and workers!
