Post Offices facing crippling pay strike

THE Post Office is facing strike action after imposing a pay freeze on workers for the second year running.

Union leaders claim a walkout by up to 4,300 staff would cripple services at the 373 Crown Offices, the major Post Offices in towns and cities. The two sides have been negotiating for months but the Communication Workers’ Union ordered a ballot for strike action on Tuesday night. In a letter to the union, the PO’s managing director Paula Vennells blames the freeze on predicted losses of £55million for the year to April. She also claims counter clerks in the Crown Offices are paid £19,000, compared with £15,000 for staff in sub-Post Offices.

Andy Furey of the CWU replied: “You’re being deliberately provocative when comparing highly skilled, dedicated and professional Crown Office workers with counter staff in privately run sub-Post Offices who are disgracefully exploited with pay rates barely above the minimum wage.

“Your failure to recognise the real value of your greatest asset, your employees, will inevitably lead to a ballot for industrial action and ultimately conflict.”

Feelings are running high among PO workers after the Tory-led government revealed plans to split it from the rest of Royal Mail, which is to be privatised.

There have also been big bonuses for PO directors. Ms Vennells’ predecessor Alan Cook enjoyed a £1.2million golden goodbye and former Royal Mail boss Adam Crozier pocketed £2.4million.
