A former policeman from east Belfast has hit out at Royal Mail, claiming his mail was tampered with.
The man, who does not wish to be identified, said his documents containing ‘personal details and sensitive information’, were returned to him without the original envelope after Royal Mail discovered them in their sorting office in Mallusk.
He said: “What concerns me is security, but not just as an ex–police officer or ex–security officer.
“I’m also concerned about my National Insurance number, bank details and driving licence being used illegally, whether it’s for someone trying to buy drink under age or taking money out of my bank account.
“I’ve had to change my bank details and ring the department of social security and phone up about my driving licence.”
He said of the mail itself: “There is no way the papers just fell out and were found lying on the floor. We haven’t got the envelope back and the mail was returned without a mark, tear or crease on it.
“It was opened on purpose,” he claimed.
He is also angry that the PSNI had asked him to send the documents “through the normal post”.
“I complained to the police at Maysfield but I was told to take it to the Post Office and that a whole lot of people had been complaining their mail hadn’t arrived.
“If I was still in the police,” he said, “I would be investigating whether Royal Mail employees were opening people’s mail, and if so, why.”
A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail policy, should an item become loose in the post, is to check for a return address and return the item
to the sender. We would always advise customers to ensure that mail is addressed and packaged correctly and to use our guaranteed Special Delivery service for valuable, sensitive or time-critical items.”
The Royal Mail was asked about the validity of the ex-police officer’s concerns that someone working within Royal Mail’s north Belfast sorting office could have gained access to his security details or address but declined to comment.
The PSNI said that tampering with mail is a criminal offence, but that Royal Mail must investigate allegations before police will get involved.

Did he ever considere that it might possibly have been crap gum on the envelope letting the contents fall out in the CFC/IMP. No, it's thieving posties yet again.
I get contents with no envelope every night - Jobcentre mail seems to be a regular offender for some reason.

Re: Ex-policeman claims mail opened
It sounds almost paranoid, or at best, irrational. I mean, there was no mention of whether this has happened to him before, what documents had been (allegedly) tampered with, or whether this document was the 1st, 2nd or whatever to be sent in this same manner?
You're almost left wondering how it is that so much information was sent in one or whatever documents the way they were sent, so much so, that he had to contact the many peeps that he did in-order to get things changed, or to let the right peeps know that his personal security had been compromised.
Then again, he may have more reason to be like this, but we won't go into that.
...The times I've come across empty, un-gummed and torn-looking envelopes is un-fugging-believe-a-bubble!
And people still go on thinking it must be us posties who are tampering with their sh*t. I mean, who else could it be (is their thinking)?

We posties do things differently, but we still get shot at!

Odds on his driving licence slid up and down inside a cheap envelope and slit it allowing the items to fall out.Why were they not using SD service and/or good envelopes is the answer to this case.I wonder if he put an sae in ?
