Ive known a couple of guys who were overpaid an allowance for 3 years and then RM wanted it all back. They appealed and ended paying back only about half at around £10 a week. If its been going on for a long time you might get to cut a deal. Best of luck.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Leave purchase option

Over and above standard entitlements, employees with less than 20 years’ service will have the chance to increase their holiday entitlement to (or towards) 6 weeks per year, by foregoing an element of basic pay. This will offer those employees who might find it attractive to take more time off from work, earlier in their career, additional annual holidays in lieu of pay. This choice must be exercised for at least one whole leave year, and for each whole week of additional leave the basic pay will be adjusted by 2%. The maximum holiday entitlement that may be gained in this way is six weeks per year. Obviously once the higher level of leave becomes an entitlement through service, or if the employee opts to return to their standard entitlement, pay is then adjusted back upwards.
So it's 2% of pay per full week.
Then you need to work out exactly how many DAYS you purchase.
Annual Leave Entitlement:
On entry = Four and a half weeks
After 5 years = Four weeks 3.5 days
After 15 years = Five weeks 1 day
After 20 years = Six weeks
Then you can work out just how much should be deducted.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

If you have the purchased extra days holiday allocation showing on your leave entitlement forms then this is definately a Royal Mail error, not yours. The only way these extra days should show up is if you completed the forms correctly and they have been processed through the relevant departments.

I also purchase extra leave and what happens is the new payments due always kick in at the beginning of the financial year, around the start of April. What makes it difficult to tell if the payments are being applied correctly is this is also normally the same week that any pay increases are applied, or changes in National insurance/income tax due to changes by the government.

Their is no separate listing on your payslip to show the deduction in the basic wage, so it can be difficult to work out if its being collected correctly. Again this is Royal Mails poor systems of working. DO NOT let your manager take you down the route of its your fault for not noticing, this is their error! Just turn the tables and reply how come you have only just noticed especially as it has been going on so long.

This is bully boy intimidation of the worst kind, so do speak with your union rep and get it reported. Unfortunately it is not unusual to hear bullying of this nature in Royal Mail by many of its managers. Dont be afraid to take them on, as with or without privatisation many of them are going to be down the road by this time next year.

Finally even though it is their error, it should be paid back. You should perhaps put forward a repayment plan over the timescale you feel comfortable with.

Am I the only one to think that RM payslips are total and utter shite?

Every other company I've worked for has listed EVERYTHING so its easy to tell whats what. If this has been going on for so long doesn't it tell RM something about the info it provides?
