Royal Mail claims Dundee East mail backlog is finally cleared

ROYAL MAIL claims it has finally cleared the backlog of undelivered letters, parcels and packages from its beleaguered Dundee East Delivery Office.

Nearly three months after it introduced the new delivery system — which the company's Scottish chief admitted "has not worked from day one" — the service is finally running on schedule.

A spokeswoman said, "Dundee East is back on track and a robust plan is in place to stabilise the office in the next six weeks. We have an additional 50 workers helping us see through this action plan."

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie welcomed the news. He said, "I'm very pleased that the backlog has been cleared.

"Looking to the future we can only hope and expect that the systems they put in place are robust, properly staffed and we never return to the situation the people of Dundee suffered, in many cases, since the start of November.

"I will be keeping a close watching brief on the situation."

Meanwhile, Police were called to an incident at the depot on Tuesday afternoon following an altercation involving staff.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said officers attended after a report of a disturbance.

"An 18-year-old man was subsequently arrested and charged with a breach of the peace."

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said, "We can confirm that the police did visit Dundee East on Tuesday to assist with an incident involving a temporary worker who is now no longer working for the business."
