Dear Colleagues

PARCELFORCE - POWERED MOBILE BOOM CONVEYORS AND POWERED FLEXI ROLLER CONVEYORS - ELECTRICAL SAFETY ALERT:

Powered mobile loading conveyors and Flexible conveyors are used in Parcelforce Worldwide for the rapid loading, unloading and handling loose loaded parcels, packages, boxes and loose goods.

Urgent action has become necessary after it has come to notice that on inspection many of these items have been found with the 240 volt, electrical supply junction box cabinet doors open instead of being locked for authorised access only. This was first identified last November by Area Safety Reps and Managers whilst carrying out Health and Safety Inspections, following which a communication was sent out to all
Depots. With further machinery found more recently to be in this unsafe condition by CWU Area Safety Reps, the matter was raised with the Parcelforce National Safety Manager and an urgent re-communication of the safety alert and required action notice sent out last November has been arranged. Romec Ltd have also been contacted with a request to ensure the cabinets are locked off and not left in an unsafe
condition. The immediate re-communication of the PFW brief (copy attached) has been sent out to all depots via the e-xpress weekly communication system.

ASRs will be carrying out checks in forthcoming Safety Inspections. ASRs will feedback directly to David Butler Parcelforce National Safety Manager. Local Depot Reps and members should report any Booms and Flexi-Rollers found in an unsafe condition to their ASR andDepot Manager immediately. If any electrical junction boxes are found not to be LOCKED, securely shut, this MUST BE rectified immediately.

Yours Sincerely

Dave Joyce
CWU National; Health, Safety & Environment Officer

URGENT MOBILE BOOM USERS
Can you please cascade the following message to all depots

MOBILE BOOM AND POWERED FLEXI ROLLER USERS

All depots using Mobile Booms or powered flexi rollers, either just for Peak, or for business as usual,
please check that the doors on the electrical boxes are secured shut and locked, also the electrical
junction boxes on the powered rollers should be bolted securely shut. If any electrical junction boxes
are found not to be LOCKED securely shut, this MUST BE rectified immediately.

It has come to light that not all Mobilebooms and powered flexi rollers are in a safe condition, and are being
used in a potentially very unsafe state. If after checking your equipment, a deficiency is found, then as normal
this must be reported to the help desk, on the appropriate call out time scale.

This is a very disturbing development with every thing else to worry about at the moment. If issues are highlighted
can you please let Peter Shufflebotham know the outcome. We should of course also be asking ROMEC why this
equipment has been left in this potentially dangerous condition.
