If you work an s/a before your shift thats okay.but i think you will find you are not insured by royal mail to be on site before your start time

Just to give a view from the part timers side of the fence.....I started on a fixed term, 3 month, 20hr contract a few weeks ago. My hours are 9- 1 but I found that if I come in on time ie at 9, I have to do the re-directs, bundle up and bag up and pick up any specials etc. whilst I am doing this all the other guys, who are waiting to be dropped off in the same van as me are moaning that they want to get going! I also feel that it is easy to critisice when you are on a fulltime contract but when your contract is fixed for only 3 months can you blame people for trying hard, and going the extra mile (or hour) to try and get their contract extended? No doubt I will now receive loads of abuse!

Not from me at least - I understand why you do it - I jsut don't agree.

Also the ones that need to get some abuse are the ones that are moaning at you because you are holding them up, easiest solution would be for them to give you a hand - and or do some of your stuff before you come in (if they have time obviously) - sometimes we can be our own worst enemies.

I mean the logic they are using is I cant help him because I am pushed getting my own duty ready - but I moan at him when he is holding me up because I am ready and he's not. I get accelerated out with a small group and we do each others kill offs etc if one is a bit behind, or take FL to the callers office, their redirections etc, why doesn't anyone else.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I'm on a three-month contract but I'm not going to be a doormat. I don't know, maybe I've just got balls .

Seriously, you'll eventually get so sick of it that you'll wise up. You'll realise there's nothing to lose any more - the reason they have you on these three-month contracts is because you mean nothing to them, so don't play their games. If your contracted start time is 9am then what reasonable person can criticise you for walking in the door at 9am. Having said that, what reasonable person believes a three and a half hour duty can be completed by a postman who is contracted for four hours a day?

That's madness, insanity. Oh, wait, no. It's defrauding honest people out of valuable time, making them give extra hours to the cause because they're desperate for work and for money. How low can you go?

Everything you say is almost certainly right but I happen to really like the job. Given time - if I get it! - I am sure my attitude will change especially when I am confident that I am up to speed and therefore if I cant do the job in the hours I am paid for - then its not my problem!

I'll tell you right now, straight and frank, you will never be able to do the job in the hours you are paid for, so start making that apparent now. Otherwise, your current period of quietness about what is achievable will be used against you. I appreciate that you like the job, but it doesn't really matter to Royal Mail whether you like it, hate it, or couldn't give a flying frak about it. It's not really of any great relevance. In fact, your determination to come in early is far more likely to do you out of a job than anything. Just think, if an office has five part-timers on 4 hour contracts, all of whom are GIVING Royal Mail an hour each day, that's one part-timer that the 'figures' will be telling them they can afford to get rid of, because there are dead hours in there. It's for this reason that so many jobs have gone out of the company, and why the company is desperately under-staffed; because MUGS everywhere are giving the company VOLUNTARY time, and rather than fighting back against the changes, they're going the other way, giving them more and more time to the point where it's completely unbelievable.

Either the workforce wises up, binds together, and does the job properly as a collective, or else it watches as more folk lose their jobs unnecessarily. But it will always be the former, there is something dark and insidious about human selfishness - it doesn't even matter when it's your best mate, it only matters when it's you who's being chucked out the door. It's only then when some of these frakking MUGS will turn around, wake the frak up and realise how frakking stupid the stupid mother frakkers have been. This is a job it's not a frakking hobby. If your lino gives you crap because you can't complete then give him some crap back. Some people really need to learn to stand up for themselves, especially if they WANT to work their hours. I can't believe the number of people who feel guilt when their lino uses his/her dark magicks against them. It's hilarious if you ask me when they're running around in desperation - just think, that guy is looking at sheets of numbers in the DOM's office, crossing your number out, and watching as your job and your livelihood goes down the pan in a plethora of loosely related numbers and statistics. If you can't think of it in either of the ways that I've outlined then congratulations, you are a bona fide Grade I incurable MUG.

That is such a terrible thing to say,not because you're scare mongering, but because you're right. What a firm.

If you work for 3 months you could spend 2 months 30 days jumping through hoops and going the extra mile and if for whatever reason 1 day you have to finish on your time...that's all they will care about.
Managers in Royal Mail have no memory span...it's not what you have done for them in the past..it's only what you will do for them tomorrow.
Trying to make a good impression is like trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon.
I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it,they will either keep you on if they need you...or they won't if they don't.
There is probably nothing you can do to influence that decision because like every other management decision in this company...it's unlikely to be based on anything other than throwing a dart at a random business plan.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
