People are not mugs! If you are on 3 months rolling contract or short term contract and refuse to be flexible then when your contract is up for renewal you find it not renewed...
Very true! As a part timer ive also had not having my contract renewed used as a threat to try and make me not claim OT and to work days off when i didnt want to! :no no If you are are wondering why all these PT staff put up with such bad conditions maybe you should be paying more attention to the amount that leave nowdays! Even in the middle of a recession the amount of people that have walked out at my DO is pretty shocking for any company. Not at all surprising though!

That was my attitude - went from Christmas Casual (paid minimum wage for every hour worked, no overtime rate, no other benefits) and just last week got an eight hour/twelve week contract.

No-one has explained to me how this contract works and when I can expect to hear about it being renewed and whether I might end up with more than the eight hours.

As I understand it, my first eight hours is normal rate. Then my next 32 hours are at the same rate and everything over that is overtime. But I've not been informed of how I claim/authorise overtime at all. It's been left that I write my start time and finish time down on the same paperwork as the FT staff and someone will work it all out.

Seems to me that RM like these contracts as people like me need the work and are willing to do long hours. But when we want a holiday or are off sick for a week, all they have to pay us is the eight hours we're contracted for.

Best bet brykins is to check with your manager everyday! Something along the lines of, "I think I'm going to taking x hours today is it OK to claim it?" Then it's up to him. What often happens is they let you claim the OT for a bit (and pay you it) then suddenly you get a payslip that's missing a few hours! :arrrghhh When you question it you're told "You shouldn't have done that OT...No-one told you to...You're not getting paid!!"
Too late then. :d'oh! Keep a diary and fill in the hours you've worked and what duties you covered.

Unfortunately you are one of the many who have to try not to upset the DIM! We've all been there Rock the Boat and you get Dumped Upon. :no no Suggest you continue to look around for a DECENT job and don't expect too much from RM. Good Luck Mate :wave

chrisj wrote:i think someof the respondents are mixing up PT contracts with 'casuals'.

Casuals are paid only for the hours worked unlike a contractual staff that gets paid the day's wage regardless of how much work is there.

However, the OP was talking about people employed under a 22 or 25 hour contract but effectively work something like a 30 hour contract from day 1 or on a regular basis.

All the 24 hours folks in my office are now effectively working 30hours. Most (if not all) are happy, of course but they lose out on the pro-rate stuff (not at lot) and possibly on holiday entitlements... Which is not fair on one hand but then they are getting more hours which is what must people want in these tough economic times.

RM is being crafty and flexible: they are of course still under the impression that mail volumes are down; and that when we get more automated, they can simply reduce their hours back to the contract of 22 or 25 hours.

People are not mugs! If you are on 3 months rolling contract or short term contract and refuse to be flexible then when your contract is up for renewal you find it not renewed...
I don't think this is a discussion about either part-time staff or casuals, at least not exclusively. This thread is a discussion about MUGS - for those of you who don't know what a MUG is, here's a helping hand:

- a MUG comes in before his start time, works for FREE, and is happy because s/he doesn't cause conflict
- a MUG uses his/her own car, for FREE, and is happy because s/he finishes early - even though in real terms they're working longer hours
- a MUG runs around, cuts corners, because a MUG knows his duty cannot be done in time but doesn't want this to be known because s/he privately blames themself; being unable to complete a duty seems to be a cause of great pride with MUGS
- a MUG is dragged in by Royal Mail, thrown around, and spat out the moment they become useless. This is why RM loves a particular kind of MUG; they worry about their contract, they worry about not rocking the boat so they can keep their job, but they don't realise that eventually, whether you're a MUG or not, you're going to be out of that door because you're disposable. That's why you're on a temporary limited hours contract, so that they can use you as their bitch, play with you a little, and not have to care about you in the slightest.

MUGS don't realise what's going on around them. MUGS presumably have no sense of peripheral vision. MUGS are some of the worst for running down this company and doing people out of jobs, but they also slowly do themselves out of a job because they're so frakking stupid and/or selfish.

It's time to learn, MUGS. Royal Mail is not your friend, it's your employer. It will never do you a favour so don't do it one.

brykins, how do you work your eight hour contract? Do you do two 4hr days or one 8 hr or something that is really going to make me vomit my tea back up. I feel sorry for you mate it looks like you are being royally shat upon. This could be the privatisation experiment.

Nothing as fixed as that. I've been told that all casuals and 8hr contracts are to start at 9am, so that's when I come in. But I'm on the rota for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week and the first 8hrs are gone by the middle of Tuesday!

Am keeping notes of every single hour I work and what I have done in those hours and haven't YET had a problem with a pay packet. But as far looking for a decent job.....not so easy when you've been made redundant from four sales jobs in the last two years so your CV looks shite, and when people are still being laid off left right and centre in my old job(s). Shame, cos I really like the RM job.

Spoke too soon. Not seen a pay slip yet but can see from internet banking that I am getting paid for eight hours for last week. I worked 32.5 in total. What a cock-up.

Wow! That is a big cock up!!!

I am sure you will be paid what you are owed but it is probably better to have a word with the PHG or manager that does the wages. No need to make a big deal of things at this stage but of it happens again; make a fuss!

32.5 hours worked on an 8 hours contract. Why cant they just give you the typical 24/25hrs or 30 hours?

Don't forget overtime (i.e. any time over your contracted hours) is paid a week behind.

Daft isn't it? I imagine it's so that if I take a week holiday, or off sick for a week, they only have to pay for eight hours.

You're right about taking holiday or going sick. This is the great "Kick Back" that RM love with PT/Temporary Staff! License to print money whilst shafting the working class! :no no
Never heard of getting any "Docket/Excess/Overtime" paid a week in arrears. I've always got it the payday after I've booked it but.......1500 Offices = 1500 different "Local Agreements" Anything to put a quid in the DIMs pocket! :whistle
