Royal Mail investigating report of mail being dumped in bin

Reports that a bundle of undelivered mail was found dumped in a bin in Monifieth are being investigated by Tayside Police.

The news is the latest blow for Royal Mail, which has been fending off complaints from customers in the east of Dundee and beyond since the introduction of a new delivery system, followed by a period of bad weather, led to a huge pile-up of undelivered letters and parcels.

Monifieth resident Brian McClue said the discarded mail was an example of the "continuing fiasco" at the Royal Mail Dundee East delivery office and its "abysmal" service in the area.

Mr McClue told The Courier that his neighbour in Brook Street came to his door on Friday night "carrying a huge wad of undelivered mail."

He went on, "Our neighbour reported that he had just found this stash in his dustbin and had decided to go down our street and complete the job our postman has obviously decided he didn't want to do."

Referring to reports that postal workers in the city had received a cash pay-out of £800 each to adopt the new delivery system, Mr McClue said, "Perhaps the postman was preoccupied trying to decide how to spend his Christmas bonus.

"I already have one parcel from Amazon which seems to have gone 'missing' and it now appears possible that it may be lying in someone's dustbin somewhere. I tried to make a complaint to Royal Mail on Saturday but there was no one in the office."

A Royal Mail spokeswoman confirmed the report of mail found dumped in a dustbin is being investigated.

"Royal Mail are grateful to residents for bringing this incident to our attention," she said. "We are working with Tayside Police on this matter."
