Early-start deliveries
We were often able to slip out unseen while leaving a mate to hide late-arriving letters for second delivery. I took mail out to rural offices at 5 in the morning and one Saturday I only had a handful of parcel's for a very small village - the single letterbag, I was told, had been taken out by the nightman doing the delivery on overtime. When I arrived at the village PO about 0515, the postie was driving back home, finished!

You might need to re-write your response Sherpas Rule (thanks) as the picture was one of several set up for a Post Office-themed photo competition I entered run by Derby Mail Centre in the 90's and it was actually 6 in the evening! Round here (Derby) it seems to be the time most delivery's now finish! No offence to posties by that. Salt of the earth - management to blame!Sherpas Rule wrote:I love that picture, now that's when most my office are starting their shift!

Re: Early-start deliveries
When I first got to my local D.O. after moving from PLSO in town, I was told by one of the old hands that, " There`s only three type of people about at this time (5am start), Burglers, Tarts and US" !. Best time of the day though....... even in the snow. I recall one winter when we did have a good fall of snow, I was kna*****d, one step forward three back. I was so pee`d off as I crossed a front garden, I kicked out at a pile of snow in my frustration... well I did`nt know there was a blasted Belfast sink under it did I. Limped all the way round the rest of me walk, well happy I was, and when I did get back to the pub, one of the `idle pi***d`, asked where `his` Giro was........ " **************** ", I politely replied, well, you can only take so much can`t yer. Cheers all, cresser.
