Text of article is:

Royal Mail came under attack yesterday for refusing to publish its delayed financial results as it emerged that it has given them to the postal regulator.

Royal Mail would not give a reason, but speculation is growing that it wants to avoid controversy over executive bonuses or hide the fact that its financial performance is better than expected. Both issues would prove tricky as it battles with the Communication Workers Union.

Royal Mail said that it had not set a date to make the results public. The figures are for its year to the end of March and usually are published in May. It has avoided a fine by sending the numbers to Postcomm within a deadline set by its licence, but the regulator has no obligation to make them public.

The delay comes as postal workers are staging a month of strikes in the worst dispute to hit the business for 11 years and as thousands of post offices are being closed.

Peter Luff, chairman of the Commons Trade and Industry Select Committee, called for immediate publication. He said: “This year, more than any other year, the figures should be made public. We are in the middle of a massive post office closure programme and the public have a right to know Royal Mail’s real financial health as they suffer industrial action.’’ Royal Mail bosses are expected to be called before the committee soon after Parliament returns in the autumn to explain what is happening. Lindsay Hoyle, the Labour MP for Chorley and a member of the committee, had been pressing for an emergency session during the recess.

A spokeswoman for Postwatch, the consumers’ group, said: “We don’t understand why Royal Mail is not publishing the figures. We have asked for them several times. We need to be able to see the state of the business.â€

Financial report

Post by Loyalblue »

It stinks! But why have the media/papers in general been so silent during this dispute? Information and facts that would help to give us public support just isn`t there or it`s buried. Can`t we do anything to add pressure to get RM to have to release this report? :mad

Royal Mail plc is owned by the Government ergo the British Public. It is about time the pressure was put firmly on the government, and the trade unions, the media and the general public should be demanding to see the financial accounts
