the reason is they have cut and cut and cut us to get their bonuses

and now they are reaping what they sow

we are at bare bones we are beyond the lowest we can take

so forgive us if after working till 3pm we do not want to do overtime

we have a life

this business has always been run on overtime it's just now we can't give it anymore

we do not want the money

we want our free time

I hope all the managers enjoyed the money they got in bonuses cos come privatisation they will be team leaders with their own walk and £10 more than we get

you reap what you sow

how does this solve cutting off and confrontation ?

i have allready offered walk testing and if you are not satisfied re testing .. how will that take u to bare bones? unless u just cant handle the job. u want a life u want ur free time .. u call getting up at 4 am a life? and whats the point in free time if ur tired as hell.. but whats at stake here is our jobs if royal mail dont get its act together and people aint getting there mail then u wont have a life .. youll have a giro cheque - whos going to deliver them? some one working for our buyers on £5.80 an hour who has a contract making him not cut off . But hey atleast the customers get all there mail which is what i want to see happen before we are bought and before we all lose our jobs.

NO 1 REASONFOR NOT DOING O/T IS RATE!

lots of other secondary reasons, but what RM pay now in o/t is just not worth it .
their is a simple formula
EFFORT OVER REWARD =PAYMENT.

In my office wich is a large one ,we use to fight over o/t,now their is as much o/t as you can handle .if you are stupid enough to work for penuts and knacker your self up,wich could lead to sickness wich could lead to you being sacked great!

quite happy with present sittuation ,start at proper time ,finnish at proper time ,have break ,what cannot be done ,comes back
SIMPLE.

What a pointless load of drivel. You once had to work overtime at times of high volumes, i.e. Christmas. Then overtime became optional by law (European Working Time Directive), the clause in your contract became null and void. Even if you argue that your clause were optional, overtime would have to be at a time suitable to each individual. The same goes for Flexibility, some might like to come in early, others stay late and others might be unable or unwilling to work beyond there contracted hours. Why cloud the issue with drivel, much better for Royal Mail to train it's mangers properly and treat it's workers properly, then you might get back to the old ways when people were proud of their job and wanted to give the extra.

post_bitch wrote:- all steps will be taken to make sure that your walk is of satsifactory length in a "normal" situation. If you feel its not please contact the "walk length" department and they will send a specialist to come and test your walk "
- I think I know what you are trying to say but who would you choose to be specialists. If it was a manager how do you ensure they are not biased towards RM, if its was CWU how do you make sure its not baised that way. If it was an independent person how do they gain experience without becoming biased 1 way or another.

- Illegal its called constructive dismissal no matter how you dress it up.
post_bitch wrote:Do you ever feel like the cwu wouldnt like this because people wont need the union as much?

cwu .. cwu... cwu......
No because IMHO the CWU helped exacerbate this problem by accepting the lowest week as the ideal week for planning purposes. Okay units may not have to accept this as the ideal week, but it would take a strong rep to go against the advice of the CWU.

Why do I think its exacerbates the problem, well using the lowest traffic weeks means that most if not all weeks will have traffic above and beyond the planned levels. This means that the work cannot be done without extra resources (overtime) and this means that management transfer the pressure they are under on to those who do not wish to work overtime. What Royal Mail and the CWU should have done was choose an average week so that all the duties are possible within the time allocated, and also build in a little leeway so that high traffic levels can be coped with; as little as 2 - 3% in attendance rate would make a vast difference.

Yes people would then finish before their time as is normal in a business with varying fluctuations, but it would also mean that they are more likely to go the extra mile when its needed. If you want a loyal and flexible workforce the business itself has to become more trusting, less confrontational, more accessible and have a more balanced approach to the carrot and stick approach. If you use a stick too much on an animal it will at some point turn round and bite you, people are exactly the same.

If walks are going to be tested i'd like to see a independent people testing the walks, some who walks around the walks at a sensible speed and not the bull we get from the managers.

In regards to including things in contracts etc, we are already protected by laws, so their is no need for trivial things added to our contracts.
The biggest problem is managers lie, victimise, bully, harass........ the list go on and on.

From the above statement, i totally agree with what he says. But sadly i think its gone well and truly beyond that. For years i went over and beyond the call of duty for Royal Mail only to even more abused. I went enough is enough. More postman have to start doing the same. Sadly not all people can do this because of contracts and length of time etc.
Gut instinct is RM is rotten from top to bottom, excluding hard working posties. We are just numbers.

In my opinion there should be No Compulsary overtime ever! If you want to work overtime to supplement your wages then you can. If you have something better to do like going to the pub why should Royal Mail have any say in what you do in Your free time

I signed up to work 5 hours a day not 1 walk per day! I constantly work overtime because RM f**** up and doesnt prep my walk, or doesnt arrange a driver in a prompt manner etc. Why should us the staff be punished because RM cant manage? Again RM have based the walk allocations on a low traffic week to save money so RM staff have work OT 70% of the time because RM dont know how to plan work loads properly. If RM actually managed their workload effectively and arranged for more staff to be present at busy periods there would be a lot less pressure on staff to work OT when they dont want to. For example xmas is the busiest period in the year lets get a couple of temps in to cover the extra work. The weather reports say there is going to be heavy snow next week lets get a couple of xmas temps in early. Its really not complicated is it?!

Part of the problem could be the promotion of managers in charge. In any other company managers would be chosen on ability and experience within the company. I dont know about other offices but most of our fearless leaders seem to be the worst cut of the workforce. There are a couple of diamonds within our management team but shockingly they seem to be allocated to the small divisions that run themselves! completely retarded.....

That is the main problem not enough staff in every office. If you can tell me an office which is running smoothly without the need of people to do overtime i'll shake their hand or maybe the doms. Royal Mail have cut back so much, that theres nothing else to cut back on.

Compulsary overtime, how many jobs would they then slash out of your office if they could force you into your 2 hours extra everyday plus your day off? i think she will go far in this company
