Job losses will be minimal
Depende if you think 1 in 6 is minimal (16%)
Depends if you are one of those losing your job.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
I dont know where this person got the idea that 1 in 6 will lose their job??? And if I lose my job, so what? There will be other jobs... There is very little to lose if you are 24-hour postman at the bottom of the food chain in a industry where seniority (which is illegal BTW) is at the root of some of the major problems.
Some of the old boys/girls need to move into the 21st century. As soon as Royal Mail is privatised, they will lose the a whole lot more than just their seniority.
There will be redundancies, some will go because they cannot accept change, some will ose thier job because they are not efficient, some post will not be advertised as some offices will be working at a higher efficiency level.
And as I said before, there will still be saturday staff doing other things... We will still work 5 days a week, perhaps less absence as we currently have a lot of scivers on saturdays (& other days) anyway. Floating jobs are not allows done well because they are not accountable. More people will have their own walks (hooray) which is what customers want and provides more consistency and more local (micro-local) knowledge.
1 in 6 job losses is completely inaccurate - there will still be cover for absence and holidays. Can you explain 1 in 6 job losses?

1 in 6 members of staff cover your day off.
If we are all off on a saturday then you don't need...you fill in the rest.

Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
Like I wrote before, it is not as simple as you put it. See my detailed post... There will still be cover postmen one way or the other.fishtank wrote:1 in 6 members of staff cover your day off.

And Job losses will happen anyway as some have said before. Better working conditions is a better goal to go for, and a more efficient and sustainable service will benefit those that remain.
A private company will get rid of saturday delivery in a heart beat. Even the courier companies that charges a packet to their customers dont deliver on saturday unless you pay even more for that service.

Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
No...there are already members who cover sick absence and annual leave...these are called reserves.chrisj wrote:Like I wrote before, it is not as simple as you put it. See my detailed post... And there are members who cover rest days....these are called rest day cover...they cover the 6th day of the week because we are a six day service with a predominantly 5 day working week so...they are approx 1/6th of the staff..
So....If ....we....were....a....5.....day......service......
Jeez....has anybody got any crayons?

Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
I agree that if I lose my job I will be more motivated to find a better alternative - I dont need your help, thank you very much. I might even be better off on the dole since I dont make that much anyway.
However, being a modern postman and a cheaper alternative to the old farts (the uncooperative and non-progressive ones), I will be very much in demand when the sh1t hits the fan.
Just making personal attacks does not advance the discussion, it just goes to show the sort of people that we have to deal with on a daily basis, and that is before we face management and Royal Mail itself.

Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
I must admit to being confused. You state that job losses from having a 5 day delivery service instead of 6 will incur only minimal job losses as there would still be need for cover men. I agree but that's only the reserves that cover leave, sickness etc. It would not include the people who cover the duty holders day off because we wont have one, we would work the whole working week.
Also with 1/6 less working days RM would need less reserves as they would only have 5 days to cover absences rather than 6.
Just an extrapolation of the fact that we would be work 1/6 less each week, than we do now, means we would suffer the same ratio in job losses. After all cant see RM paying the same wage bill for less work if would be neither efficient or conducive to garnering profit, its just doesn't at first glance seem logical to believe that job losses would be "minimal".
I don't think Fishes "crayons" comment was personal otherwise as moderator I would have addressed it. I think he was just frustrated that you made a statement but then offered no logical explanation for your belief that job losses would be minimal.
Perhaps you could expand on that part of your post about redundancies etc a bit more because to avoid the 1 in 6 job losses you don't think will happen, you would need to replace those that leave when this bright new future arrives. Otherwise you end up with the 1 in 6 job losses wouldn't you.

Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
I would vote to get rid of Saturdays, I have children(as I'm sure a lot of you do) and would like to be able to do a lot more things on a weekend rather than just after 2pm !!
