Shortly after the Christmas and New Year festivities had come to an end there was always an intensive "Spring clean" of every van and truck at Derby. This was two-fold, really. One, it gave them all a thorough external and much needed wash by hand, and two, the equally thorough internal clean and valet would clear out the build-up of empty bags, strings, and elastic bands, plus the occasional misplaced letter or, as often happened, the discovery of a full collection bag! Also found was loads of newspapers, half-eaten sandwiches, sweets, chocolate bars - you name it, we found it, even porno mags! Probably the worst thing to do was clearing out all the ash trays and sweeping up the ash from van floors - terrible smell and dust, as a result, very noticable to a non-smoker like me.
It was always done over a weekend and done by volunteer postman - on overtime, naturally. All the clothing was Royal Mail issue, of course, even the wellies, so we just got on with it and earned the brass despite it being a very dirty job.
Anyone do a similar thing at their office?
