Deutsche Post DHL van procurement to improve carbon efficiency

Those in procurement jobs at Deutsche Post DHL have completed details of a contract that will see 1,300 new Mercedes Benz Sprinters added to its fleet.

The post and courier service received the first of these vehicles last week, where they were delivered to the Cologne/Leverkusen branch.

Additional vehicles are set to be delivered to other German states by mid-2011, with the van procurement forming part of Deutsche Post DHL's ongoing carbon efficiency drive.

Commenting on the procurement contract, delivery group head of business department mail delivery Thomas Zuber explained: "These new vehicles will allow us to meet European standards, reduce emissions and thus cut the amount of pollution in road traffic.

"This makes them especially viable for the long-term in the sensitive, fine-particulate zones in German downtown areas."

Earlier this month in the UK, Ethical Consumer magazine lauded two leading supermarkets for the introduction of procurement processes designed to improve sustainability.

The Co-op and Marks and Spencer are the two greenest supermarkets in the UK, according to the publication.
