Royal Mail admits: we failed you

Royal Mail has admitted it failed in its attempt to clear a huge backlog of undelivered mail by Christmas — saying there are still "some" letters and parcels left undelivered at the Dundee East depot.

However, a spokeswoman was unable to confirm the backlog amounts to what The Courier understands to be thousands of letters.

The admission follows desperate attempts by the company to clear the backlog, drafting in extra staff and having postal staff out delivering items at nights in the run-up to Christmas Eve.

The Courier understands there are still thousands of mail items — among them Christmas cards and parcels — sitting in the depot undelivered. And as staff are now off until Wednesday there are fears some items will not even get to their destination before the end of the year.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said, "Like any other essential service we have been hampered by the worst weather for 30 years. Royal Mail has undertaken their biggest ever weather recovery programme to get the mail delivered.

"There is some mail still to be delivered in Dundee East delivery office and our top priority when our postmen and women return to work on Wednesday is to deliver this mail to our customers."

Two weeks ago Royal Mail issued an apology to the people of Dundee East for giving them such a poor delivery service — and pledged to do all it could to make it up in time for Christmas.

Scottish director Paul Kelly and Tayside and Fife sector manager Terry Allan had joined the ranks of postmen and women as they struggled to implement a new working system and then battle their way through the worst early winter weather in a generation to deliver mail.

So serious were the problems at DD4 and DD5 postcode areas the Scottish and area chiefs made visits — not just to see what has been going on, but to deliver letters and parcels themselves.

No it's not but Dundee was flagged up at the highest level and it was given an open chequebook to solve the problems.
It has had everything from multiple planning teams, their IPS done for them elsewhere to bus loads of casuals and managers thrown at it and still they could't clear.
Just how stubborn are management going to be before they realise that this whole pegasus/IWT/lowest traffic week bollocks is throwing up ridiculous unachievable workloads?
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Dundee West failed aswell conveniently as Edinburgh provided a 40 york shut-out van at half 8 on Christmas Eve. Rumours were abound that mail was being deliberately held back so the whole city would fail, and cover up the East's problems. In theory if The Central and West cleared The East's problems would be blamed on the "new system not working". But if the whole city failed Royal Mail could blame the weather! :whistle

Nice to see we're right that they will blame the weather rather than admit their revision was a total balls up  Lots of offices have had to deal with the bad weather but didn't have the problems that Dundee East had.

Exactly. Which leads me to think the rumour is more than just that. By providing us with a 40 york shut-out they gave us no chance in hell of clearing the office. But thesedays nothing surprises me. They will never admit they got it wrong with the revision. As far as i'm aware Pitlochry, and Dundee Central are still holding mail for Dundee East.

If the rumours are true, that must be like a red rag to an ambitious local Journo.
What a scoop that would be.
It would be awful if someone tipped :whistle him the wink

Yep ,my manager took on a High Street walk in Thetford when they went on strike and despite the fact it hadn't been done for several days and he was doing it blind it only took him half the time of the regular duty-holder.
What is funny is when they came to our office including loads of other managers and little helpers they couldn't manage even only taking out first class only.

RM can blame the weather all they like. What excuse are they going to use when the snow and ice are gone, and we're back to normal! The mail and packet backlog situation started long before the snow and ice and Christmas pressure started, we all know that. It's a result of the revisions made up and down the country that haven't worked, fact!
