Desperate bid to clear backlog of Dundee East deliveries

Cards and parcels were delivered in Dundee East on Thursday night in a desperate bid to clear a massive mail backlog in time for Christmas.

There are doubts, however, that the emergency measure, which is due to continue into this afternoon, will succeed.

Sources known to The Courier at the beleaguered depot in West Pitkerro said that the piles of mail and parcels inside the premises were so high it is unlikely they will be cleared by today.

"I think there will be a lot of people who won't get their cards and presents in time for Christmas," said one contact.

"Mail of all kinds has been sent out to other depots to be sorted and returned for delivery, but there's so much of it that it's very difficult to see the posties getting it all out on time," said another.

Two weeks ago Royal Mail issued an apology to the people of Dundee East for giving them such a poor delivery service — and pledged to do all they can to make it up in time for Christmas.

Scottish director Paul Kelly and Tayside and Fife sector manager Terry Allan had joined the ranks of postmen and women as they struggled to implement a new working system and then battle their way through the worst early winter weather in a generation to deliver mail.

So serious were the problems at DD4 and DD5 postcode areas that the Scottish and area chiefs made personal visits — not just to see what has been going on — but to deliver letters and parcels themselves.

The new working system led to a massive backlog of mail which prompted a torrent of complaints from Courier readers.

Extra staff were drafted in to Dundee east for sorting duties, mail was sent to other depots for sorting, emergency deliveries were started on Sundays and letters and parcels were delivered on alternate days as a tactic to clear the mail mountain.

We asked the organisation on Thursday if Christmas mail would be delivered in Dundee East on time.

A Royal Mail spokesman said, "Our postmen and women are continuing their huge efforts to deliver to customers in the face of sustained severe weather which has been the worst start to the winter in living memory.

"Deliveries are being made this evening and will continue until Christmas Eve afternoon.

"Royal Mail has invested an additional £20m in measures to tackle the severe weather conditions and deliver as quickly as possible.

"In addition, we expect our people to have carried out up to 25,000 additional delivery rounds by Christmas."

Complaints to The Courier about irregular or no mail deliveries have been incessant for more than a month.

Bill Martin, from Ballinard Road in Broughty Ferry, yesterday said, "Deliveries in recent weeks have been down to a maximum of three per week, and this has been going on for some time.

"This month I received a letter posted in East Kilbride on November 30 and delivered to me on December 11. I emailed a complaint about the service over a week ago and received no reply."

Theres got to be over 250000 xmas letters in that office undelivered,Thousands of parcls and as many tracked, sitting there for days. so much so, the 50 agency folk are there til end of Jan, and theyve asked for volunteers this tuesday ffs to deliver mail, nightshift is continuing for at least another 2 weeks, an absolute disgrace.

Of another walk, "you walk above average pace" yet still cut off 2 and a half hours work!!!!!
