Stolen Sutton parcels to be returned, insists Royal Mail

Following a recent spate of parcel thefts by a Sutton postman Royal Mail have assured customers they will be returning their post to them.

The postie was arrested last week on suspicion of stealing Christmas presents worth thousands of pounds from parcels he was meant to be delivering.

Police believe he had been delivering parcels to an address in Cedar Road, Sutton, where they were being hoarded.

But Royal Mail, who have suspended the individual, confirmed the parcels, as well as a letter of apology, will be returned as soon as possible.

A spokesperson said: "Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

“We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust."

Officers from Sutton's Crime Squad raided the Cedar Road flat on Monday night after a tip-off and found a haul of some 100 stolen parcels.

Presents that had been opened included top of the range trainers, Sat Navs, MP3 Players and headphones.

The officers pounced as the man, in his 30s, was seen to enter the property. He was arrested for theft.

A woman, aged in her 20s, also in the flat at the time of the raid, was arrested for handling stolen goods.

Some of the parcels were in transit from internet suppliers to customers and had been sent between family members and friends.

A police spokesman said the value of the goods was likely to run into thousands of pounds.

He added: “This has all happened so quickly that people are unlikely to know that their gifts are missing. We hope that they will arrive in time for Christmas.”
