Student Demo Leaflet

Post by flyingfish »

The Key Issues Today

The financial institutions’ search for maximum profits is the mechanism that is destroying society. It is the driving force behind the crisis which the cuts in social spending are supposed to pay for. As long as bailing out the banks continues the devastation will also continue.
Financial institutions’ profits are based on risk taking but we pay for these risks. It’s like the bankers being at a casino where they keep the winnings, however if they lose the taxpayer and future generations are forced to pick up the bill and refill the coffers. As long as this situation continues, not only will this crisis deepen, but there are dangers of further and bigger crises.
Irrespective of what happens in the tuition fees vote today, the cuts in health, education, benefits and all social spending will still have to be stopped. Each and every person here today will decide how to carry on the battle. In doing that the key point to keep in mind is that the source of the crisis is the act of bailing out the financial institutions and banks; of putting their profits before the needs of the people in society. It is perfectly possible to invest in social spending.
Neo liberalism has failed dramatically and yet the government is carrying on ignoring this fact. All the politicians are unable to resist the lobbying, pressure, blackmail and bribes from powerful financiers.
This state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue and it is up to all of us to make changes in any way that we can. Open Discussion 9.12.2010 opendisc@ymail.com

Wonderful rhetoric...............and the alternative solution is..............I wait with bated breath.

Of course the fact that there ARE universities at all is due to student rioting................or public finances. The time is long overdue when our eductional institutions really do need an overhaul. What is the point of a 50 year old taking a degree..............youngsters with a degree can't get a job. I sometimes wonder if it's not for some personal egotistical reason that people take a degree at all........in some misguided idea that it gives them kudos.

My experience of education is the same as my experience of law ,that it is a great money earner for the middle-classes and with often a cushy lifestyle to boot.

Not that I am fundamentally opposed to either , I hasten to add ,but they do provide cushy numbers that a postie would give their delivery arm for.

70% of students that go through college or university either drop put or never do anything job-wise with what they learn. There is also no such thing as free education for all, someone has to pay for it.

Well you say that a large proportion don't do anything job wise with what they learn but who needs someone with a degree in Origami for the Illiterate.......or some such nonsense degree.........................

Take fashion for example.............does it really take 3 years to learn how to sew a button on.........most fashionistas will leave university with a degree believing they are gods gift, open a shop, go bust and end up on the checkout at Tesco......so why not just go direct to Tesco......they'll probably never sew a button on again and buy all their clothes from ASDA.

These days you need a degree to get a job in a Call Centre.
I'd guess a fair number of our MDEC colleagues have degrees.
