December 14: Time to praise weather commitment of posties

Sir, — Having read the reader's comment "sheer laziness" (December 10) regarding posties in the Leven area, I felt I had to write to you.

I cannot comment on the Leven area but I live in a rural part of Fife served by Cupar Post Office and, as far as I am aware, we have only missed one day of post here in all the bad weather.

With school buses not running and the local primary permanently closed, this area is sadly forgotten about when it comes to snow clearing and the postmen and woman have had to deal with treacherous roads and walking surfaces.

One young postman had to leave his van to trudge about three miles through more than a foot of snow and ice to deliver to half a dozen houses.

The majority of people in these houses are elderly and the postman can be their only contact at this time.

I am also led to believe that others have been working Sundays to try to make sure local parcels are being delivered.

Having worked doing both milk and roll delivery rounds I appreciate the effort these posties are putting in. So come on folks, when we're sitting nice and warm with our cup of tea, in a house or office, let's give credit where credit is due and give a thought to the postie. We're all good at moaning but not so good at giving praise to those who really do try their best.

I AM frankly fed up with all the moaners and groaners airing their grumpiness in the papers.

What they are grumpy about either cannot be remedied or might be remedied by a phone call.

So here, by way of a change, is a heartfelt thank you.

Thank you to the snow men and women who kept Sheffield moving recently, although perhaps a littleADVERTISEMENT slowly the traffic was still moving where it was possible for gritters and snowploughs to reasonably be expected to work.

No one can work 24 hours a day and a snowplough needs a skilled driver.

The arterial roads were kept as clear as possible in the circumstances.

The gritter drivers, snow plough operators, the people with shovels and grit all showed true grit when they turned out to clear the main thoroughfares and fronts of local shops.

Thank you also to the wonderful bus drivers who took extra care in the snow and ice to keep going as long as possible so people could get to work, go for shopping and get home.

Thank you to all the people who work in health and the teachers who did their utmost to keep the schools open and the shop workers who kept shops open.

Thank you to the train staff who kept as many services as possible running and allowed people with pre-booked tickets, which are much cheaper than walk on tickets, to use them on trains other than the ones they were booked on so we had a better chance of arriving at our destination.

Thank you to the civil servants who promptly sent out cold weather payments. A few less old people will die, for fear of not being able to pay a heating bill.

Thank you to all the people who work on heating systems for turning out and working overtime to keep others warm Thank you to all the care workers who tried to get to their clients.

Thank you to the posties who deliver our mail.

Thank you to all those who took time to clear their bit of pavement, making it easier for those on foot to get around.

Thank you to all the patient drivers who take extra care when we pedestrians need to walk on the road for safety's sake and to save precious energy when we are out in the cold.

I can assure you that London skids to a halt in far less snow than we experience here and the pavements are no clearer than ours.

Cheer up Grumpies, we can do it all again next week if the forecast is right.

I long as the tracking is updated and I can be sure its moving I m happy. I didnt mean to come across as being impatient. It was posted on tueday, the postoffice in KY15 confirmed it has left, so it should be at a sorting office. What sort of backlog can I expect, and can I expect it to register on the track and trace web site. I know its only been almost 3 days, but I thought specials were been given proroity?
