Re: First Day Tommrow, Any Tips/Advice?
Best advice is tie up as the frame and number your bundles
Take the number of the office in case you get stuck or confused over anything
Write down the addresses of your bag drops, the last thing you want to do is forget where your second bags are
if you have an a-z take that
and dont panic or stress out when you see people going out before you

Re: First Day Tommrow, Any Tips/Advice?
Good luck for tomorrow
If you get a duty, ask if there's a walk log for it. That should give you some information regarding the area, any hazards etc to be looking out for. There should be one for each walk/duty. There probably won't be, but if there is one, read it. You're entitled to read it, and the staff are meant to read it every month and sign it.
That, of course, never happens either. It contains (should do...) the health and safety information for that duty. If anything happens while you're on that duty, if it wasn't pointed out to you previously, you've got more weight to your complaint as it were.
There's lots of things you should do and lots of things that never happen. Try to stay in the "should do" category rather than the other
Always do things by the book. That way, you can't get screwed over if anything goes wrong for whatever reason.

Re: First Day Tommrow, Any Tips/Advice?
Hi.
When you first arrive at your fitting, if you look towards the floor to either side you will probably locate a number of boxes of leaflets.
These are your new GOD.
In some cases known as unaddressed mail, you shall not call them by such an unworthy name. They are either your God or your Messiah. Sometimes they dress themselves up in the guise of pizza leaflets or BT envelopes, but don't treat them so simply. Understand that your God presents itself before you in many forms.
Your first task upon arriving in a morning shall be to collate your God together and place your God in its rightful home; i.e., the fitting. You are expected to fulfill the needs of 1/6th of your God per day. To massage its ego, your God must be delivered to every single house over the course of the week and any failure to service your God in just such a way is a most heinous crime quite often punishable by smiting.
Royal Mail has for some time found itself in the grasp of the vengeful, demanding God and has neither the desire nor the gumption to resist the God's wiles. So, remember to treat your God respectfully. Your God takes precedence over all other types of mail as your God is the only growth market that RM holds. Apparently.

All good advice the most the important thing is to make sure you have a pee just before leaving the office.

Re: First Day Tommrow, Any Tips/Advice?
Wigan's given you a good idiots guide (no offence)
The main thing is DON'T GET STRESSED everyone will be running around like blue arsed flies, and you will probably be the last out of the office. That's quite normal and happens to everyone, remember some of these guys have been doing this for 20 years, so they know all the little time saving tricks.
Instead of turning letters for parcels and recorded (although I can remember them they've got a sticker on
) you might want to try putting a 739 (red card) in. This has the added advantage that if you steam out of the office like a head-less chicken (I still manage to do it
)at least you'll have a card when you get there.
As mentioned number your bundles so you don't get lost. I would also recommend a pocket radio or MP3 player they certainly help my day along.
Try reading some of the other posts on the site and you'll get a feel for the business. You only have to Work your contracted hours, unless you want the overtime and get that OKd before you do it, remember to take your allowed breaks, don't be bullied into something you're not happy with. If in doubt ask another Postie.
Good Luck

Re: First Day Tommrow, Any Tips/Advice?
You will have encounters with complete scumbags on your walk,
some chav types and also more "respectable" types who take great delight in ripping the piss out of you,
the latter won't think twice about ringing your boss and complaining about u if u respond in an abusive / threatening manner,
regardless of how tempting it is (and believe me the urge to respond with a volley of expletives to some people i've encountered over the years is frightening), don't bite, if it comes to it, just walk away, don't enter into any discussion.
u will also be approached by people on the street (more or less on a daily basis) who will say they live at such and such address, they have to go somewhere and can they have their mail there and then,
under no circumstances give them anything, explain u are not allowed to do this,
1. u don't know if they live at the address they stated,
2. they will ask u next day and everyday for their mail on the street, u will have to search through your bags for it, costs a lot of time,
3. other mempers of the public will see u do this and expect the same,
4. other mempers of the public will see u do this and call your boss to inform him of what u did.
try to ignore dickheads who say "oh postie, u can send the bills back, we don't want any", u will hear that 15-20 times a day, every day

Re: First Day Tommrow, Any Tips/Advice?
Take a couple of painkillers before you start in the morning, even for someone pretty fit doing a delivery can come as quite a shock to the feet and legs. When I started I promised myself that I wouldn't leave on a bad day and believe me you will have plenty especially with the snow forecast again!! If you really can't stick it make sure you have thought it through well, not just thrown the head up when the going gets tough. Also try wearing 2 pairs of socks I do this even in the summer, it seems to stop my feet getting blisters or rubbing. Since you won't have a uniform do wear layers, you do get warm out walking for several hours and the jumper that you thought would keep you nice and cosy will need to come off after a bit. Don't panic about your speed it is totally different to any other job but it will click with you all of a sudden and you will wonder why you worried so much, good luck .

A big flask of tea/cofee to use on regular recharges through your delivery walk plus take plenty of food , as you get paid to take breaks at Royal Mail (20 mins when working less than 5 hours; +10 at 5 hours and every 2 hours after that) and this job is very demanding physically at this time of year.
