Ill Health Retirement

Post by de-coded »

I will have a 2nd Stage 3 coming up due to a health problem, so Ill Health Retirement has been mentioned. Does anyone know how this is worked out, is it something like two months wages for each full year of employement.

For some reason my shift manager said I would get 9 weeks wages on top in lieu of notice on top of any lump sum all tax and NI free.

Any help anyone can offer will be appreciated

How much you get depends on how many years service you have. Your manager was right you get 9 weeks notice and any holiday pay you are due. You are taxed on the holiday pay but if the rest of the money due is uner £30K you don't have any deductions. Nice wee sum to get you started on something else as I am doing at the minute. :Very Happy

I will have 3 full years of service, this will be on 18th August my current sick note runs out in a couple of weeks.

I have bought extra holiday how will they work that out, seeing I paid to take it to 30 days, but used 15 so far.

You will get 4 months pay plus the 9 weeks this will be tax and NI free. Then any holiday pay due this will be taxed and NI contributions deducted from it. Hope this helps clear things up for you. All the best for the future.

They work how many extra days you have paid for and allow you for them.

What happens to your pension if you take medical severance. Is it frozen till you are 60? Does it increase with future pay rises etc etc.

Lets say i take Medical severance with over 22 years service, how much would i be entitiled to and what can i expect pension when im 60 on a current pensionable pay of 22k.

P/S I fall into the 40/50 bracket

So on top of the 4 months pay and 9 weeks what else do you get?? i.e. so much for each year you have worked there??? I thought this money comes out of your pension, how hard do you think this will make us all to get another job for those who take it and are still young??

You should go and see your union rep before you make any decisions, because ill health retirement can be complicated and you want to make sure you get a good ill health retirement package.

Well said Marky I was off just more than 12 months and they tried to finish me,luckily we have a VERY good union rep. and he told me DDA act kicked in, and I just sat tight. Have been back at work now 4yrs albeit on a rural driving duty, but I'm happy with that :nana

There may not be any strict guidelines as we had one that had been going off sick for 6 months every 6 months for about 4 years that I know, mind you I think he was working his ticket.

Yea and i wonder how they get away with it, mayb dda is the case. I reckon they would get shot of any long-term sick b4 they get to the 12 months to be covered by the dda act!
