A ROYAL Mail delivery office says it has no backlog of post and that its postmen have been out on all routes, battling against freezing temperatures and icy roads.

The Swadlincote delivery office, in Civic Way, says that it has only lost one day to the bad weather, at a time of year when its workload is tripled because of the festive season.

In a typical day, the office has 75,000 items to deliver in Swadlincote and the surrounding area.

The Royal Mail has come under fire recently, with some homes in Burton and South Derbyshire going without any post for nearly a fortnight.

Delivery office manager, Mark McGowan, said: “In Swadlincote there has only been one day when we haven’t been able to go out because of the freezing fog. If a postman decides that it is unsafe to deliver to a particular address, they won’t deliver there.

“Some people’s perception of what’s safe and what isn’t is different. People need to remember that our staff have to make between 700 and 800 deliveries every day and some rural areas have been difficult to access.
“Fortunately, none of our staff have been injured as a result of the cold weather.”

Mr McGowan added that anyone who had not received post would be able to go into the delivery office to collect their mail if they brought along suitable identification.
He also said the office was dealing with increased festive workload.

He added: “People go crazy and we see a surge in parcels that have been ordered from the internet, and of course Christmas cards.

“Some staff have been starting work at 3am to help us clear through the extra workload. Come what may, everything will be cleared by Christmas Eve.”

Conservative MP Heather Wheeler, who represents South Derbyshire, visited staff at the office yesterday to see how they dealt with the increased workload during the festive season.
She was also keen to find out why so many people had gone without post for so long after she received complaints from residents in Hatton and Bretby.

Mrs Wheeler said: “It’s been helpful to come out and see the staff following the week of weather that we have had, and I feel that it will help me respond to anyone who has any complaints about the service.
“Interestingly, I’ve not had any from this particular area.

“I know that I’m very grateful for the service we get in this area, and I wish them all a safe New Year.”

The last post day before Christmas for standard parcels is Wednesday December 15.

Second class recorded items need to be posted by Saturday, December 18, and first class items needed to be sent by Tuesday, December 21.

Why should a manager be doing OPG work? If he's doing that then he's not doing his own work and if it needs another body to do the work then employ someone! Managers doing OPG work makes the figures look better!

No, they are kept in the top of the frames, just look on top and they should be there...............and if not then you need to complain to your DOM for one

Look - if you turn up at my office and we are two walks down that day, you take out half a walk.
Being an MP (or just some random member of the public who has wandered in looking for the callers office) isn't an excuse.
If you are in the building you work as instructed.
