First-class Gary battles icy weather every day to deliver the post

THEY have been battling the elements to deliver post through the region's letterboxes.

Although Royal Mail has been criticised this week for keeping customers in the dark over mail delays, many postmen and women on the ground have been singled out for praise.

They include Gary Thompson, who has been delivering post in Market Weighton.

Mr Thompson, 44, has been out every day despite the heavy snow, including Sundays.


He said: "You are just doing your job and trying not to let the weather beat you.

"It's been slow-going and it's tiring too.

"When all the snow first came down it was quite hard work walking in it, because you were doing giant strides.

"We've had a few people saying 'well done' for getting the post through, but it's business as usual."

Mr Thompson said deciding which routes were safe was about using common sense.

He said: "You have got to keep going and use your common sense.

"If you see a farm track the farmer can't get out of, it's not safe, but if you see a street where an old lady is going out to the shops you are going to be able to walk down that street."

Reg Cox has been keeping mail moving in Summergroves Way, west Hull.

One resident, who didn't want to be named, told the Mail: "The snow has been really bad here – it's absolutely horrendous down our street – but Reg has been out every single day apart from last Friday.

"He has been battling the heavy snow to deliver the post and he's always really happy.

"He was showing off his new boots which help him to walk in the snow."

In Burton Pidsea, postman David Sharp and his colleagues have been trying their best to get letters and parcels to people in the village.

Mr Sharp, 51, said: "The main roads are clear, but the side roads are very dangerous, especially for large delivery wagons.

"Myself and my fellow postwoman Lynne made two trips through to Malmo Road postal depot, the first to pick up the mail and then back again for the packets.

"We know we were not allowed to go out and deliver the mail due to the obvious dangers, so we both prepared it ready for when it was safe to do so.

"This way we were not delaying the post any longer than necessary.

"This also enabled us to hand out mail to anyone who wanted to collect it, providing we knew them or they had identification to prove who they were."

On the Mail's Facebook page, Susan Goodwin thanked the postman on Staithes Road in Preston for delivering post every day.

And Gerry Grindley, 56, was full of praise for his postman Kevin Hardy, who delivers in Greygarth Close, Bransholme.

He said: "My postman is a hero.

"I live down Greygarth Close – not only did he post my mail this morning, he pushed my car off the ice so I could get moving."

Gary the hero eh???? And when/if he falls and injures himself will Royal Mail take responsibility and shall he be exempt from any warnings for time off work due to this injury. I don't think so. The man's a fool!
