A SKIP full of posties’ bikes and spare bike parts was the sorry sight greeting visitors at a Royal Mail office in Poole.

Royal Mail will be phasing out the majority of its bicycles for postmen, from a fleet to of 24,000 to just a few hundred for rural routes.

Businessman and cyclist Patrick Marsh was horrified by what he saw when collecting a parcel at the Poole Delivery Office in Dear Hay Lane on Wednesday.

“I noticed a skip full of bicycles which all looked to be roadworthy and boxes and boxes of spare parts – cables, wheels, tyre tubes,” he said.

“I asked why don’t they give them to a charity or something so they can help someone.

“I’m quite an avid cyclist when the weather’s a bit better – it’s just disgusting.”

But a spokeswoman for Royal Mail insisted the bikes were beyond repair.

She added: “The bikes in the skip are either unusable, beyond repair or have already been used for spare parts. We haven’t thrown away new parts – but we have had a clear out of the bike repair workshop at Poole.

“Royal Mail recycles its old bikes, and has been doing so for over 10 years.”

“It is certainly not a straightforward switch to vans for those postmen and women who currently use bicycles.

“We will not be getting rid of all bicycles and they will remain part of our delivery operation nationally, with decisions taken locally.”

She said the service delivered fewer letters but more parcels and packets than before and the switch to van and trolleys for postmen would “take the weight of the staff’s backs” and “reduce cycling accidents.”
