POSTAL staff are aiming to catch up with deliveries after freezing weather disrupted rounds across Notts.

The Royal Mail says staff are making as many deliveries as possible in the icy conditions, following criticism some residents have not been receiving post.

Freelance journalist Matt Hurst, who works from his home in Constance Street, Basford, has had no post for more than a week – despite his neighbours being able to go out and get to work.

Mr Hurst said he had rang Royal Mail and was told deliveries from Glaisdale Parkway depot were not being done because of "adverse weather conditions".


He said: "I think Royal Mail are treating customers very badly.

"They seem to have no idea they need to deliver the post and if they can't do that they need to explain why.

"It's a bit slippery but that's not stopping most people going out and getting on with their lives.

"Work deliveries I rely on haven't arrived, and I can't be the only one."

A Royal Mail spokesman said there had been problems with deliveries across Nottingham and Notts.

He said: "We have had problems with Constance Street. It is one of the hilliest parts of the area and a number of properties have steep driveways or steps.

"The delivery was taken out yesterday so the customer in question should receive mail."

The spokesman said staff had been instructed to assess the safety of places they were delivering to and added: "Whilst roads may be clear many pavements and driveways are still treacherous and our postmen and women are carrying pouches containing up to 16kg of mail, with the average delivery round including six to eight pouches.

"We are having to balance keeping our staff safe and continuing to make as many deliveries as possible."

Meanwhile, the Met Office is forecasting temperatures will rise above freezing in Notts tomorrow for the first time in more than a week.

Both Nottingham City and Notts County councils said they had the resources in place to carry out repairs to any potholes in roads that might have developed as a result of the cold snap.

A county council spokeswoman said the authority's highways maintenance budget for 2010/11was £39.8 million, up 5.1 per cent on last year.

There was also a stockpile of around 3,000 tonnes of grit for the county's roads, which the council said was being replenished daily to ensure there was enough salt to last into the new year.

Earlier this year the Government gave out an extra £1.5 million towards repairing potholes and other damage caused to the city and county roads last winter.

A total of 20 schools were closed in Notts yesterday due to problems caused by the wintry weather.

I wish folk would remember that while they sit at home watching folk go to work, or are indeed on their way to work indoors, being outside in temperatures of minus several degrees whilst concentrating on walking and remembering where you are delivering to isn't easy.

Frozen brain and hypothermia set in very very quickly and after more than half an hour you can run the risk of this in these conditions (maybe even less time to be honest). We don't simply walk a little bit, we're out in it for hours at a time. Why can't people understand this?

Royal Mail should be making a proper statement politely telling customers that staff are not superhuman, we cannot be out indefinite periods of time, mail is slowly going through the network, hence as well as limited deliveries, there are limited items of mail at the delivery offices. I don't know why they don't do this.

If that is treacherous then f#ck knows what I have been delivering in, my manager must be taking the p1ss big time sending us out in the conditions we delivered in.
