Royal Mail faces wrath of angry residents after they demand their post

ROYAL Mail has continued to deny suspending delivery rounds in the Derby area, despite furious residents lobbying its main offices, demanding undelivered post.
On Saturday morning, dozens of people queued outside the city’s central sorting office in Midland Road to try to get hold of post which many claimed had not been delivered for nearly a week.
The action came after claims from Royal Mail workers in Derby that household rounds had been secretly suspended since last Tuesday because of the icy conditions.
Angry locals waited outside the Derby depot, trying to get hold of undelivered mail, which included Giro cheques, bank statements, bills, letters and parcels.
Danny Spratt, of Kerry Street, Chaddesden, said he was worried about the health of his diabetic dog after a regular parcel of insulin and needles was not delivered to his home.
The 41-year-old, who failed to receive the parcel from the depot on Saturday, said: “We’ve practically run out of insulin and, without it, I’m worried my dog, Jenna, will die.
“I queued up and asked at the office but they said it was like looking for a needle in a haystack, they had so many parcels there. As far as I can tell it’s full of undelivered post in there.
“We have had no post at our house for days and they have not given me any idea when I will get it.”
After the Derby Telegraph story on Saturday asking what had happened to the city’s post, people from Allenton, Allestree, Swarkestone, Mickleover, Breadsall, Sunnyhill, Oakwood and Chellaston, contacted us to say they had not had mail since last week.
Deliveries were made throughout the weekend, with many people getting backlogs of mail brought to their doors on Sunday.
On Saturday, one postman contacted the Derby Telegraph to say he and his colleagues had turned up to work every day last week but had been told they were not allowed to go out.
He said: “The majority of us did want to go out because we still have to deliver all the backlog and we will not get paid for working extra hours to do this.
“I am even going in for free on my day off to get the mail out, so please don’t label the honest postmen and women as lazy, because we are anything but that.
“The condition of the pavements is not so much the issue as the condition of people’s gardens leading from the road to the door.”
A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said the company was making deliveries wherever it was able to.
She said: “We are working as well as we can in difficult conditions. We have never had a blanket ban on deliveries in Derbyshire and we are looking at each delivery on a case by case basis.
“We are reviewing the situation on a regular basis and we apologise to everyone for any inconvenience they may have experienced.”

Royal Mail is not a charity, we are not volunteers, we are PAID to work. Spouting this to a local newspaper, not a clever move!
