So 2 monthly credit card statements.
Quarterly gas/electricity bills.
Phone bill every month.
Council tax?

If everyone has like you decided to pay these by direct debit, how many millions of letters less is that every year?
How long before you get your bank statements online as well?
And the generation that comes after you will receive even less mail.

David McCullough from Oxfam says it is expecting to lose £100,000 this Christmas, as sales of seasonal cards plummet by up to 10%.

I am 46 btw
I dont think this is a valid argument at all. direct debit has increased the amount of paper statements if anything as people still want physical proof of financial accounts. Online means fraud for a lot of people so a paper statement is essential in that respect.

Also how many people actually bother tom check their online bank account regularly? Im sure many people cant be arsed to go through all the security or actually forget. When the statement comes through the door all is revealed.

The point is if you pay by Direct Debit - you don't SEND the payment. Therefore less mail.
The Oxfam quote is a 10% reduction in cards sent - not 10% less sold by Oxfam.

The fact is Caniel the ton of crap you get is low margin crap.
The remaining paper bill brigade are now the minority mostly DSA and therefore low margin or loss making.
Almost all of our high margin earners have gone.
The only growth high margin products are packets, tracked and specials and they need park&loop....and so do you.

We once bought some cards off UNICEF - we still get mail (and e-mails) from them - we still buy cards - but not from UNICEF ... this is probably how these charities measure "declining sales" ...
"We're under model" - oh no we're not - stick your lapse elsewhere ...

All charities suffer during a recession.

One thing people cut back on is giving. Oxfam are struggling in other areas not just cards.

What better way to highlight the plight of charities that focus on declining card sales. People feel guilty then buy the cards...

Shave the beard off, it makes you look years older :chuckle

Ft and you are right though, there has been a distinct drop in cards over the years, we seemed to be sat forever on IPS leaving at 11 on delivery and out til 3 but in the more recent years there hardly seemed to be a difference.

What it earns us isn't the issue being discussed here it's the fact there's a ton of it and I think it's increasing rather than falling.

I can't remember ever sending money or a cheque to pay utility bills before Direct Debit or my parents for that matter. Before Direct Debit I took the payment slip off the bottom of the bill then went to the bank or post office and paid it. All Direct Debit has done is save me a trip to pay the bill. I still get the bill.

You're mistaken Caniel the original post was...
what is the end point of this park n loop
Then end point is building a sustainable business model on growth high profit margin products not relying on an arguably dwindling volume but definitely financially reducing revenue stream.
It doesn't matter if there is the same amount of s**t as there always was....with the likes of TNT taking a cut for doing f**k all we cannot make any real money from it.
I'm not saying it will work as it carries all the hallmarks of Royal Mail's typically half-assed implementation techniques but to do nothing at all is not and never was an option.
