Lottery winner puts £1m ticket in post

A British pensioner may have lost his chance to claim £1 million ($1.6 million) after posting his winning lottery ticket back to the lottery's organisers.

Bernard McHugh, 77, said he mailed the ticket back to Camelot group, the operator of Britain's national lottery, after he saw the numbers match a newspaper article on unclaimed prizes for the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle last Thursday, The Sun reported.

But Mr McHugh, of Blackburn, faces a nervous wait, as Camelot has not yet received the ticket.

"I thought that is what you were supposed to do," he told The Sun.

"I saw the address on the back of the ticket and it said winners should contact them so that's what I did. My family couldn't believe it when I told them I'd won. When they asked where the ticket was and I told them I'd posted it they were shocked.

"It will get there. I'm not worried yet."

Mr McHugh's family said he was "very old-fashioned" and that he still did not have a mobile phone or use the internet.

"Posting your winning lottery ticket would seem a very bizarre thing to do to most people, but not Bernard. He just saw the address on the back of the ticket and thought that was how he claimed his money.

"He doesn't like speaking to people on the phone so [he] thought notifying Camelot by post was the best thing to do. We have our fingers crossed that the ticket gets there. He's never had much money and this would be life-changing."

But all may not be lost, even if Mr McHugh's letter is misplaced in the mail, Camelot said.

"You can [make a] claim but there's certain things we would know about a ticket and where it was bought," a spokesman for the company told the Daily Mail.

"This applies to anyone whether they've lost the ticket, if it's damaged or if the dog's eaten it."
