Gazeley sells Strood site to Royal Mail

Gazeley, a global provider of sustainable logistics space, has agreed the sale of G. Park Strood, one of the most sought-after distribution sites in south-east England, to Royal Mail.

The 5.5ha plot, formerly comprising a 1960s distribution warehouse, was bought by Gazeley in 2008, and has detailed planning permission for a new 26,194 sq m (275,000 sq ft) warehouse incorporating Gazeley’s renowned environmental initiatives.

The derelict buildings on the site have been demolished and a new entrance to the site is currently under construction, which will reduce vehicle movements through Strood town centre and provide a more direct route, of less than a mile, to Junction 2 of the M2.

Gazeley’s involvement in the site reflects the popularity of the area in terms of development and investment. The new facility for Royal Mail, which is subject to a revised planning application, will boost local employment and help regenerate the area.

Nigel Godfrey, senior vice president of UK operations at Gazeley, comments, “The quality of our sites and infrastructure development continue to attract investment from leading business, despite current market conditions. This news places Gazeley in a strong position for 2010 to continue investing in and developing key sites across strategic positions in the UK, which so far has included deals at G. Park Crick and G. Park Swindon.”

Royal Mail’s south-east England regional operations director, Tom Willis, said, “We are modernising our operations in Kent, with investment in new purpose-built buildings incorporating the latest energy-saving measures, sorting technology and helping us reduce vehicle mileage by some 600,000 miles per year. This will enable us to improve efficiency, give better service and value as well as provide our people with a safer and more modern working environment.”
