ROYAL Mail has recruited more than 400 people to help it handle the region’s festive mailbag.
The recuits will work at the newly-opened Warrington Mail Centre, which processes mail from Liverpool, Warrington, Crewe and Wigan.
A total of 440 workers will be working temporarily in the run-up to Christmas, including around 140 people from the Liverpool area.
Liverpool’s post now goes to Warrington after the city’s sorting office closed in October, ending its 33-year history.
About 600 employees moved to the Warrington site from Copperas Hill, although some took redundancy.
Nationally, Royal Mail has recruited almost 20,000 people to sort Christmas cards and packets before they go to delivery offices for postmen and women to take out on their rounds.
They were whittled down from more than 70,000 people who asked to work with the company over Christmas.
Royal Mail’s head of resourcing Maurice Harbottle said: “We saw a phenomenal response from people keen to earn extra money and help Royal Mail deliver a great Christmas.
“We are delighted with the number and quality of the applications and many of the people we will be using are regulars who support us Christmas after Christmas.”

It used to be a festive tradition at crewe, of finding a huge pile of cards behind the ceiling tiles above the toilet cubicles.

IB in my MC say loads of empty envelopes and wrapping paper gets stuffed down the toilets.
First seasonal sighting of police car at MC yesterday, presumably to take away casual caught stealing.
