Derby - So what has happened to city's missing post?

MYSTERY surrounds why post has not been delivered to Derby homes as the bad weather has exerted its icy grip.

Royal Mail workers in the city claim that household rounds have been secretly suspended since Tuesday because of the slippery conditions.

And, they claim, there is no prospect of residential deliveries resuming until the weather improves or until postmen get special spiked boots to help them tackle the freezing conditions.

Some householders and businesses say they have not had any post since Monday, and have been told it is for health and safety reasons.


But Royal Mail denies that a decision has been taken to stop going out to homes and said it is doing as complete a job as possible.

Workers at Royal Mail's Midland Road depot said it has been "too risky" to go door-to-door since the first heavy snowfalls on Tuesday.

Some deliveries are still being made to businesses and about 60 per cent of posted mail has been collected, they said.

Householder Peter Scherer, who has not received any post since Monday, said he rang Royal Mail to complain.

The 55-year-old, of Trowels Lane, Derby, said: "I was told that it is too icy for postmen to walk on the streets."

A spokesperson for the Royal Mail denied residential deliveries had been suspended, but said she could not give any figures for the amount of mail being delivered.

She said: "We are making deliveries wherever possible – we apologise to our customers for any inconvenience."

However, a Royal Mail source said households had not received anything since the beginning of the week because it was "too risky" for postal workers.

He added: "A postal worker could fall and break their leg. Not only could they sue but they will expect full pay while off sick as well."

On Tuesday, postal staff turned up for work, only to be told to go home again, the source claimed.

"Since Wednesday staff have been coming in and sorting out the deliveries so everything is ready to go. But it is now a matter of reviewing the weather on a day-by-day basis," he added.

He said some business deliveries were continuing in a bid to free up space at the depot.

But not all postboxes were being emptied because postal workers in vans were not able to drive down the roads, he added.

"If a letter urgently needs posting then people are being advised to bring it down to the depot themselves."

The source also said that postal workers in Derbyshire were awaiting the delivery of "spikeys" – studs which are placed on boots to enable walking in icy conditions – on December 10.

Resident David Phypers, of Albert Road, Chaddesden, said a postbox on his street had not been emptied for almost a week and he had not received mail in that time.

"My grandfather delivered mail twice a day for 40 years, whatever the weather. This is health and safety gone mad," he said.

Su Strange, of the Association of Mathematics Teachers in Shaftesbury Street, said her office had not received any mail since Tuesday. She said: "We have been told it is due to health and safety issues."

found some snow chains in the locker that nobody ever uses, why? i don't know as they are brilliant best thing RM have given me since the harrington!
they are german RUD snow chains for your shoes, fab! we have had it bad for over two weeks, have worn them every day and they really do work, that must be the reason the DOM can't get anymore!

A lot of this is about respect for your employer. No doubt there were problems years ago between workers and management, but in those days management came from grass roots and new what was possible and what was,nt. Today respect is absolutley zilch because the majority of managers have never picked up a bag of mail and work on theory, and computers that they input to achieve the result and savings that will buy them a big bonus. Postmen will not put themselves at risk for people who have no thought for our welfare.

Get plenty of offers just don.t have time to drink them! In th old days. 50's 60's and berfore, most posties could quite happily while away the odd hour or two, in 'socialising' on there round. ans not get the sack! if you'll pardon the pun!
