delivery update geo route

Post by Martin Walsh »

Geo route version 8 will still continue but the union is still being involved in changes.

The union has been going on about reducing the dead time walking speed of 4 mph ( remember this is only wakling between points and is not over the whole walk ) to 3.7 mph and some testing is still there. However Royal Mail are pointing out that every delivery point has in built time of 6.3 seconds at the door and they do not believe it takes 6.3 seconds to put the mail through the letter box so they argue that indivduals make time on this element. This issue is still being argued.

The union have also argued that there should be an different speed based on age and gender however again there is no resolution.

Attendance call time ( packets etc ) tests in a live enviornment 28 seconds for a succussful packet and 78 seconds for an unsuccussful delivery of a packet. The debate on how many will be succussful or not is normally about half.

Number of attendance calls ie knocks on the door. Royal Mail currently give about 17 attendance calls per 500 delivery points , it is imporant if you believe that this is more in your office that you argue this case.

Vechile speeds can be adjusted for CDVs and its important where you have an issue that you drive the loop and ensure suitable time is in the computer.

The union has asked for the previous geo route version prior to 2008 to test some of the planning values however not surprisingly Royal Mail state they cannot provide for this as they no longer have lience for the previous Geo route programme. The union has got the figures for the previous geo route and is review the planning values of both geo route programmes.

There is also some other issues which are being reviewed such as path lengths , relaxation allowance .

It is also important to remember that you have to agree manually the amount of time for welfare stops etc this includes time to go and the location and any time walking to and from. In addition how many times you will need a welfare stop.

We argue the case...but we are told the mantra...."But it's all been agreed nationally by the CWU"......"You voted it in".....etc :arrrghhh

So they accept that they have set the wrong walking speed but as the delivery time (the 6.3 seconds) is wrong too it balances out! Laughable.

Dingo, you cant make this job a science. Deliveries take as long as they take. You cant say each drop takes 6.8 seconds or a packet takes 68 seconds or whathaveyou. If you do then you are dealing with averages and not specifics and therefore the attempt at trying to isolate time taken to do certain tasks is already a load of crap.

Also I find it offensive that the CWU is trying to get more time allowed if youre a woman or older. this is both sexist and ageist and means that men below 40 would be asked to do more work than their colleagues just because they have a scrotum and were born after 1970...outrageous. Why not extend it to sexual orientation too while youre at it...

That is the very problem with RM they want to deal in averages, not specifics!

78 seconds to knock, wait, if its tracked or registered or recorded endorse the pda ,then notice left the item and then post notice left (six seconds). well I must be slow then.

Maybe the offices I work in are strange ,but most walks could achieve that figure daily just with registered and recorded . It comes nowhere near the true figure for all packets ,and that's before a CDV revision.
Attendance call time ( packets etc ) tests in a live enviornment 28 seconds for a succussful packet and 78 seconds for an unsuccussful delivery of a packet.

:chuckle Was the live environment an olympic village by any chance? Maybe RM should do a mail drop informing the public that failure to answer the door within 70 seconds will be classed as a failure of recipient performance levels and when they collect the packet they will be given formal notice of their shortcomings; a second offense could warrant counseling ; All subsequent transgressions to be punished by a fine that reflects the extra handling costs incurred .

Small wonder why so many report tits up revisions if those are the values inputted

So how much time does the scenario of " knock door, wait, fill out epod, form left, mark packet, put form through door, customer opens door, re-fill out epod, customer signs, postie mutters twat under breath" allow?

Its anomalies such as this that arent accounted for in the science that is and RM/CWU packet delivery equation.

Everything like the above happening is multiplied by 2 on park and loop , because your partner will be waiting back at the van for you . Stuck in traffic x 2 , one loop having more packets than the other x 2 , a customer can't find his keys to open the front door to collect his packet x 2 and you can only complete your 2 duties at the pace of the slowest person , So overtime will be booked by 2 people because one might have been a little slower .

use georoute or any other system you want you cant decide how long a delivery should be on a computer there are too many variables and a computer doesnt allow for human fatigue.

How the f..ck they can make this job a science I shall never know. How do they calculate for wind speeds, excess drag on your mode of transport depending on the moisture in the atmosphere, the volume of traffic on the road at any given time. The need to take additional relief breaks during colder weather. I could go on and on, but what I do know is that no piece of equipment can even provide an average for a job that differs so dramatically from day to day, and from one walk to another on a daily basis. The job takes what it takes that day and if that means paying overtime then so be it. Money is being wasted on trying to tighten down every last screw, rather than winning new business and growing the wealth within this company.

Every day i get dog s**t on the wheels of my LWT and have to run it over some grass to get it off before the trolley goes back in the van otherwise the s**t ends up all over the inside of the van and the mail.
It sounds trivial but it has to be done.........but not according to pegasus.
I take it the dogs don't s**t in the "live testing" areas. :cuppa

It's a rough town...everybody has a dog.
The point sounds trivial but the 60 seconds changeover/replenishment time is ridiculous.

Royal Mail are losing money on things like World Class Mail management training courses, not staff booking an hours OT to complete. They forget how many people dont bother claiming the odd minute here and there which would, if claimed, amount to a sizable amount of money over a lifetime.

Im still baffled as to how this job has becom so complicated.

To me its simply:

1. Royal Mail give me mail in a bag.
2. I deliver it.
3. I go home.

Guess Ill never get my head round it.
